I just found this guy, Heads1st.com.  He is a perfectionist with every machine tool known to mankind.  He's got the heads off my Shovel right now.  Check out some of his posts in the forum over at Speedtalk.com under user name 'gofaster'.

Ya between the race and the cam bearing. Just about 12 oclock. I would like to talk about options on this repair. I was told the the area, cam hole and pinion race can be removed and replaced. I only heard this suggested once but to me it seems to be the only solution.
