So I've been pondering this for awhile now. 2001 Tsport 117"er. Last summer after upgrading the clutch basket to an EVO industries and thinking i had all bases covered for a bullet proof build I went out and abused it hard. Wheelies and hard launches type of stuff. A short time later a decel vibration was noticed. My new clutch shell was wobbling on the mainshaft. Bad bearing. No big deal to replace it but what I noticed was the run out on my OEM mainshaft was now close to the limit at 0.0025". I should probably be thinking about a replacement mainshft if not a complete kit.

If I was to upgrade, what are the options? I see the Baker DD5 builders kit, Andrews kit and Zipper's Zip-rack kit. Looks like Baker comes with everything, shift drum and gaskets but the others may not. Zippers has back cut gears. Do I need this?

Another thought, it seems like the grudge box is popular with the high HP guys. But since my bike is 2001, it's not available. Is a DD5 equally strong or even close? A 6 speed hasn't really grabbed me as a must have. Might be nice if 100MPH steady speeds were a thing but the most I cruise is 125KPH at 3500 RPM. Sometimes 140 for shorter bursts. (Okay sometimes 160  :embarrassed:)

I use the bike for some touring, some hot rodding, some hot rod-touring, and some 2 up but I may get into some track days if I can ever make time. May get another touring bike and dedicate this one for hot rodding and track.

Valued opinions needed please.

Interested in this also. 120 powered 2000 FXDX.
I would really like something that shifts better - smoother/quicker and more positive.
I also have a problem with finding false neutrals, (maybe partly because of nerve damage )
I find the 5 speed ratio's are fine, without wanting 6.

Talk to Baker, when I did the tranny in my 01 roadking, 120" 135 hp/tq. They didn't recommend the DD6. They told me the only one they would recommend was the OD6. The dd6 wasn't rated for high hp/to applications.
That was a few years ago things might have changed,  but I'd ask before purchasing.
I got mine thru California Phil.

Good Morning Keith,
Can not answer your question directly, but there might be something here in this thread to assist in your quest http://harleytechtalk.com/htt/index.php?topic=106806.0 .
I'm curious what back cutting gears does and doesnt do ... you know pros and cons.
Best Regards All.

I've been running the ziprack for 2 years, best HD trans I've ever had.  I put 200 HP plus on it with the NOS, it has taken everything I can throw at it.

Baker DD5 is $895. Hard to beat the price.

Not all 'Zip Racks' are equal. Zippers will inspect the customer proved shafts and gears for serviceability, condem anything that is out of spec and in addition to rebuilding the trans, will back cut the dogs and ears on gears provided by the customer.

That '01 trans uses the 'High Contact' gears (fine teeth compared to the earlier style gears used). Andrews uses the earlier style gears with the larger and stronger teeth. I think a full gear set and shafts from Andrews can be had for around $800. This is what I would send to Zippers to be back cut.

That shifter drum and pawl in that '01 bike is crap compared to the '02 and up. I prefer the oem '02 drum and pawl over the stuff from Baker (that's right).

Fun fact - I rebuild a lot of transmissions for my FXR buddies. Most of these rebuilds use take off gear sets, drums and pawls from '02 and up five speeds. I will tell you that it is very rare that the main shafts in these late model gear sets are within .001" runout and always get a new main shaft.

An Andrews gear set, '02 drum and pawl is very stout combination and shifts very well. The Andrews gears canoe had with a couple different 1st gear ratios. The oem harley first is somewhat of a granny gear in a light bike like your DX. If you do not opt for the Andrews gear set, you should look at getting a close ratio first gear set from Andrews (It canoe plugged right into your existing '01 gear set).

The Baker N1 drum will solve the finding neutral problem real quick.

I did have Zippers get me a Baker 2.08 second gear, they backcut and dropped the Rockwell on it, gave a much better gear split than the HD 2.24 second.

Just so that I don't make incorrect assumptions, back cutting does what exactly? Smoother shifts?

Did you ever get back on the dyno after this?

Yes i did. Several times. I dynoed it with Zippers G3 carb (never got it tuned) it made 156rwhp. And best result it got with D carb 161rwhp. I´m adding G-extreme kit and new exhaust this winter. No track time.

Nice.
What final drive ratio did you use with the  OD6?
