See the general page, Fast has a good write-up on it and I think it's a stickey at the top of the page.  I had to start a photobucket account (free) to get mine to post.

Go to your photo editor and do a save as, first do a right click on your pic and check properties it has to be 350kb or smaller. If pic is to large do an edit and crop all that doesn't need to be there then do your save as.

This is my 78 FXE Superglide, i picked it up last year and wanted to build a prostreet style bike, so i built a jackshaft swingarm to get the chain from the left to the right to get around the 300mm rear tire, some like it some dont but its still a Shovel.  Sulley

This is my photobucket link for the whole build.

I have a special warm spot in my heart for the FXS in the silver color scheme.  Not that I ever owned one, I didn't but that low rider was a pretty cool bike.

I can see the mods done to this one.  My 78 1/2 had those pipes on it too, sounded very nice.  This one is good enough to completly restore to stock with just a couple changes.  Very nice find.  When I bought my original 79 FXEF-80 they had a FXS-1200 sitting there in silver and I was trying to decide which way and jumped the FXEF. I have questioned that decision since; I am envious of your bike.  Own well, BOB

Heres my new ride. An early 79 FXEF Superglide Fatbob. Needs a few cosmetics and I lost a couple parts already after 100 miles. Solenoid cover and the nut on back of the seat. The nut was easy (lock-tite) but I need a solenoid cover to replace it. Lookin at some apes and longer cables too.

Kind of a mongrel, but it's my first Hog - only two months old. Got it from a kind of Jessie James in the RI area.
Rebuilt FX 74 cu (and tranny) - bored to 80 cu, WG front end, softail fender, fatbob tanks, S&S super B carb.

Generally, a Sportster on steroids! Love the kickstart! (and electric). I think all bikes should have it.

Here's a couple pics Of a 1982 FLH I just bought today. I was able to get the original air cleaner, muffs, flex seat and derby cover with the bike. The guy even had the original 2 stripe Goodyear tires that came with the bike and there still a lot of tread left. This bike has the oil return hoses on the tappet blocks. 14K original miles.

I love this thread!  What a killer score RD!!  What are your plans? Are you going to keep it like it is or install the stock pieces you got from the owner?  How cool that you've got the original double-strip Goodyears.  I'd put those on there if this was going to be a parage bike or show bike.  But if you're planning on riding it at speed, I don't think I'd put 30 year old rubber under it.

DAMN SHARP LOOKING RIDE!  Maybe I'll take my '82 back to original.  Looks like I know where to get some nice pics.

Can't tell if you got a pin through the front clip of the saddlebags.  If not...Living on the Edge.

Question?

Where's the bungee cords?

I never had a green bike before but this one was just to nice to walk away from. I'm hoping this one doesn't harbor the curse. I to, like the color and the paint is in like new condition. It needed a battery and I was able to find a glass mat AGM for it to eliminate the possibility of any acid damage. The dealer wanted 140.00 for an acid battery and I was able to pick up the AGM for 89.00 In case anyone is looking for an AGM for a FLH here is the info on it. It's made by Adventure Power from Universal Power Group and the web site is at WWW.UPGI.COM (http://WWW.UPGI.COM) the model number is UBVT-7 Nothin sucks more than to buy a nice set of pipes and have em destroyed by acid. I'm look'n into installing a pogo. Has anybody done this to one of theses later bikes using the smaller 45 pogo? Looks like the center post is open at the bottom with no way to bolt the pogo up. I think'n you have to weld a plate on the bottom and drill a hole for the pogo to mount. Once the post is in there how does it fit up? Loose, tight er just right?

Post by: 96flhpi on September 27, 2013, 06:57:11 AM
I put a pogo on my '82 by making a 16 gauge steel bracket and bolting it to the frame cross member just because I have no welding skills.  You need the the 45 pogo like you said.  Also turn down the 45 bushing until it fits the top of the post tube.  The post is too loose and the seat was slightly flopping left to right prior to that.

BTW great looking scoot, saved the pics to my hard drive.  I'd love to get my hands on one of those #1 points covers but not for the ransom they go for on e-bay.

To soon to tell... Only about 300 miles on her. After chasing down and killing a couple gremlins, I started playing with the setup a couple days ago. I went from 12 to 20 discs in the Supertrapp, but fried the electronic ignition on the test run. Replaced that and went for a test ride yesterday but ended up chasing the curve due to pinging.

Re-gapped the plugs and welded up the cracked chain guard last night, powder coated this morning and wanted to test & tune this afternoon... Looked at the forecast; 10" of snow this weekend; ended up tuning up the snowblower instead.

Nice to see someone can build a custom without an 18" wide back tire.  I'd ride that in a heartbeat.

Yeah, yeah, I'd be laid up with my back for a week afterwards, but from the looks of the bike, it'd be worth it.

yeah, yeah.  My back won't let me ride a rigid frame any more either, but I still think the "Billy Bike" or anything resembling it as the way a motorcycle should look.
It's the way my Ironhead was set up, and it's the way my Triumph before that was set up.
Now I ride a full boat FLT, or one that's been stripped to FLHS trim, or, occasionally, my wife's FXEF.
Just 'cuz my body got old, doesn't mean I don't remember my youth fondly.

Here's my 82 FXRS. Factory original paint mostly original rest. Rubber mounted 5 speed. I bought this bike in 1990 and I've been riding it and wrenching it for 25 years. It is the miracle shovel in that it does not leak anything from anywhere except occasionally wet sumps out the breather.[attach=0]

Thanks Hogman, was a pretty even trade. ...1974 bmw for a 1974 FLH. Had two sportsters, this is my first big twin. About 25 years ago went on a ride with my buddies who all had shovels. That was the first time I had seen a post seat.  From that moment on, knew I'd have one someday.

Subtle.   Hah.

My local guy had the chrome one just sitting. For $25 I tossed it on.
Yes front end chrome.  Rear end black

OK I think I have removed all the photo links that were no longer functional which then made a lot of the comments irrelevant so they had to go too.  It was actually fun to go back to 2008 and review all the pics again.  Sadly some of the names are no longer with us and unfortunately 28 pages of pics is now down to 8 or so. If your pics are gone please repost if possible.

My own 76 FLH pics were axed due to me parting ways with photobucket. So here are the ones I have stored on Imgur.

I tried it on mine, did not like. Too high and too far forward for a shrimpo like me at only 5'8". The front edges of the seat cut into the backs of my legs at a stop. I have a pogo on my Indian and it works great though. Sure wish I could get it work on the Shovel, love the look.

5'8" here too, or at least I used to be, definitely not a candidate for the factory pogo configuration.   My Mustang wide solo is about perfect after I moved it back as far as I could get it and tilited it slightly up in front.  It so big to me it only looks right with the big saddlebags installed. Not a bad thing I suppose.

Dang Wolf, I love the fender mounts. I was thinking of doing something similar on my chopper build mainly with the rear fender and sissy bar. It helps me to see it done.

So a couple shots of my 78 shovelhead lowrider. Bought it brand new. It turned 40 years old about 3 weeks ago. Still ride it pretty regular.

I've had this 66 flh for quite a few years. Bought it from a friend ,when he bought it ,it was all original. He started to tear it apart, put a yamaha front end on it and sold about all the other parts. He finally had the frontend replaced with a 68. I had it for a few yrs. before the front rod broke and destroyed the cases. I put a set of Deltron cases and s&s 93" sidewinder kit in - dual plugged the heads- ported them-5 speed tranny -set of rubber mounted tanks. A lot of other changes. Not original but still fun to drive.

It is very very nice and has the OEM Rack and Locking Tour Pak and also the OEM bags, the bags on it are not the OEM, they are put away. Bike runs like a Shovel fired right up and idled with the smoothest of Potato's, engine has been split and all rebuilt complete he has all the paperwork.

[attach=2,msg1328839] This was my 1975 FX. I bought it used when I was 18. Loved that I cut my teeth on the kick start only, but to be honest, it always started easily (I did put a larger FXE battery on as I hated the look of the small battery). Rebuilt it a few times in the 6 years I had it. Added fat bob tanks, chrome, paint and 84cu S$S kit at the end. Sold it in 1986 when I got a Heritage. I have regretted selling it since. I recently tracked it down in New Mexico. Made contact with the guy's wife and she said he won't sell it as he has a bond with it due to redoing it with his father. I would like to talk to him personally and give him the history on the bike and ask if he ever considers selling it to give me the first shot. Who knows, time will tell but I'm running out of runway. Loved that bike.

Thanks much. The bike had some good stuff with it like S&S rods n wheels 88 inches, a nice cycle E genny and already had Andrews gears in the trans so somebody spent some good money on it at one time however this thing was abused for many years with an enormous amount of cobblery done to it over those years. It was really the worst I had ever seen. Don't get me wrong, I have seen a lot of rigged crap just not all on the same scoot.

When I got it there wasn't any oil in the front forks (bottom was leaking on both sides) sent them to a shop known for doing good work fixing that and got them back leaking worse than before so I got off my lazy butt and figured out how to fix them myself. The front brake cable was just going straight thru the clamp instead of looping around the stud so pulling hard on the front brake in a panic situation would have been disastrous. This was a running bike at some point but how I do not know how as it does have S&S cylinders on it and since it is a big bore with the original heads they never opened up the heads enough to fit over the big bore cylinders so the heads would do a dance around the fire ring but not sit flat on the cylinder surface. All the cam cover screw holes had to be repaired, Oh yeah, you'll love this one. They just used silicone for a cam cover gasket but kept the original cam spacer and thrust washer and just jammed it all together. The spacer and thrust washer were beat up but luckily did not disintegrate and go thru the engine. I won't even discuss the primary.

This poor bike was really hacked bad and if I had known how bad it was before I tore into it I would have just parted it out but by then it was to late and I decided to do it right and make it mine.

Here's my idea of a nice genny Shovel. Build is as follows. 88 inch S&S rods wheels and cylinders, KB 9.5-1 forged pistons, NOS OEM rocker arms & shafts, valve job on the heads from Randy Long as they also thought it was a good idea to jam a old style big thread ford spark plug in the rear cylinder when the threads went bad, velva touch Lifters (actually) for shovel or pan oiling, a real Tom Sifton 440 cam I was saving for the right time and damn glad it finally happened LOL, S&S oil pump, Mik 42 carb, Andrews gears, Rivera Primo clutch, cycle electric genny, new OEM brake shoes and spring kits, new chains Primary and final with a rear chain tensioner to save the starter mount on the inner primary, wiring, bearings wheels, front end and swing arm etc.

Timmer was in very good condition so I just cleaned it, lubed it and installed a new set of OEM points and condenser. Was told due to the increase in compression I would need a electronic iggy but guess what???? Set it up right and no issues at all. No ping and starts on first kick or just touch the starter button she fires right up and idles smooth. Bottom end was rebuilt and balanced to 60% with rebuilt rods, new S&S shafts and cam cover bushings replaced, all new control cables (barnett) and on and on.

Everything works as it should including the turn signal indicators and the neutral safety sw which will not allow the bike to start when in gear just like original. I really love building bikes from the frame up. That being said, this is my last build so I wanted to make it a good one as good parts either OEM or USA aftermarket are getting hard to find and just God awful expensive. That coupled with the fact that I had to return so many obviously defective parts or parts that were just not even close in their description from sellers (7 in one week) I just don't want to put myself thru it anymore as it takes the fun right out of it when you live in an area where you have to order everything in, which sets you back three weeks by the time you get it, return it, and then reorder it. She's a beautiful bike and runs and handles like it should. I am happy to have built my own as I ride into the western sunset in my retirement. She's a beautiful machine fer sher.....  :chop:

That is a pretty sweet ride! You've done a great job.
What color is that? It reminds me of a friend who painted his old shovel with some old lacquer he had that belonged to a late 40s pickup. The official name was "some type of red", I believe. I think it's a great color.
Title: Re: Show those Shovels!
Post by: Reddog74usa on January 19, 2020, 12:48:05 PM
Thanks for the positive comments. Hoss, the color is very close to the maroon that came on the 83 FXWG's but I do not have the paint code as I got the paint from a friend of mine that worked with his painter to come up with this color so I'm not much help in that regard however if you really are going to paint a bike in this color I do have a bit of touch up I could put in a vial and send to you to get analyzed if you'd like. Thanks for the complements. This one was a tough one but it's finally done. Now that the weather is breaking I have been getting some break in rides on it and she really runs great.

As I was reading your tale of rebuilding it, it was like deja vu. My '77 was essentially in a similar state of condition, everything that could wear out, was. Or worse. Even after getting it all rebuilt and running, it took another year and change to go back in and fix stuff for a second or even third time. The front forks, for example. And the transmission. And primary drive. Luckily I love doing that kind of stuff, and now all it needs is to ridden. Which I do at every opportunity.

Enjoy!!

"Even after getting it all rebuilt and running, it took another year and change to go back in and fix stuff for a second or even third time."

JW, That's exactly what I'm going thru right now. Kept the iggy coil that came with the bike and all seemed good but the bike just wasn't acting right then it cut out and would restart but not run right. Knowing everything else was new I swapped out the coil I had on hand from an old FXR I had and man she ran great. I knew I was onto something when I first hit the starter button and she fired right up like it should have all this time as it was not starting like it should for quite a while. Really turning out to be a damn sweet ride. The Sifton 440 really works well with the 9.1 CR and has power right where you want it when going down the road. No downshift needed in 4th gear when I want to pass and pulls real strong when needed like getting on the interstate. I am running the stock ignition with points and timing set for an 88 incher with no piging or PMS  :bike:

[attach=3]

It's mostly stock, with a few exceptions like CV40 carb and Cycle Shack exhaust. I've focused more on polished aluminum, and black powder coat in places instead of chrome, so that's a deviation from the factory look but more to my liking. It's no hot rod, but gets the job done and is a pure joy to ride. Probably the most enjoyable in my stable.

Thanks dudes! The color is House of Kolor Candy Cobalt. The guy that painted it had to get it from the UK, as it was oil based and all they sell in the US now is water based, which looks different, not as deep blue. I should have had him paint the bags while it was being done, but didn't. Did not really want this bike as a "bagger", I like the stripped down FLH look personally.

You just can't beat the classic lines and style of a Harley Davidson FLH all the way up to the Road king. It takes a lot of work, time and effort to bring them back from being totally worn out. Oh yeah and a lot of money also, but man is it nice when it's done and turned out as nice as yours and, you know every nut and bolt on the bike. Most riders don't build their own bike so it's real cool when you see someone doing it O'l School. Again, Nice work.

I just picked up this 82 FXE from the original owner. Bone stock never been into and runs very smooth with great power for what it is. No leaks or taps or smoking. These are real hard to find in this shape. Even all the hardware is original. The 2-1 is an old discontinued cycle shack that sounds great. I have the mid controls for it and they will be going on asap.

rode it a bunch of miles...many Sturgis'...and 2 5k trips on a Gary Bang king queen seat. ...'course I was a younger man in those days...    I'll be looking for some pix of that and Decoster to post....

What about wet sanding using a hard block and maybe some tape close to the pinstripes to protect the clear.  Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish works good to bring it to a shine.  I did some re-touch on a BMW tank that worked out pretty good.  ymmv.

Another thing to try is a pressure washer, Red the thing is depending how long it has been on there the stripes may come off but the paint will more than likely have a lasting shadow, you might really think about taking it to a Paint Shop Body Shop and have them Polish/Buff them and be done with it in one process.

JW. I've done a few parts with Rustoleum satin black. I like it so much more than seeing flat paint. Did you clear or wet sand afterward? I don't do bodywork or real paint so my process is all shade tree.
Title: Re: Show those Shovels!
Post by: JW113 on January 30, 2021, 10:09:39 AM
Same here, Rustoleum satin black. And I agree, to my eye it looks "blacker" than flat black. No wet sand or any other post paint work. And if I do say so myself, I'm pretty handy with a rattle can. I can get that last coat on nice and wet without runs, so there is hardly any orange peel or overspray. At that time, I was putting a LOT of annual miles on that bike, road trips all over the country along with daily commute bike. So at the of the year, the paint would have it's share of patina, especially on the front surfaces. So I'd pull the metal, sand a bit to smooth the smashed bugs & such down, and shoot another couple coats out in the back yard. All set for the next season!

Title: Re: Show those Shovels!

Yeah, that's the trick with rattle can painting.  The fast dry / set means overspray leaves a fuzzy finish where it lands.  You have to organize your start point so there is no back spray.  A fan on low can help.  And if you work outdoors and a mosuito lands in it, resist the temptation to try to get it out while it is wet.   :crook:

Fired it up and let it run until warm. Adjusted carb and she sounds good to go. Will check torques again if it warms up might try a little ride.

I guess I should have put this in shovelhead section. Guido I bought this bike in 78 and have rode it far enough that the odometer has turned over, shows 47000 now. I have been wanting to rebuild top end for couple years. Third time I have been through it in 43 years.

Nice!  Beautiful bike. I just finished doing the top end on my panhead. Just in time for good riding weather since I'm in Arizona.

This was my hold out Shovel. I finally sold it in 1995 directly to an HD dealer. They offered me $7,500 which was right at what it would sell it for in 1995. So no hassling with buyers, they wrote me a check.

I had trouble letting this one go.
1977 FXE, 98" S&S Sidewinder, Andrews #6 cam, Dyna ignition, S&S E carb, Branch reworked heads, all Andrews in the four speed.

I had already owned this one twice. Sold it the first time, then had the opportunity to get it back thee years later. So I owned it from 1980 to 1986, then again from 1989 to 1995. All of the upgrades were done the first time I owned it.

When I bought this in 1980 it was stone stock, original grey metallic, super glide gas tank, original fenders, etc. Had 3,100 miles on it.

Just picked this one up. I have been looking for some time. Most of what I saw was cobbled together parts. This is exactly what I was looking for. I got the original tanks, bags, seat, and passenger pegs. Numbers match.

Title: Birthday or Anniversary
Post by: bump on August 08, 2022, 03:10:02 AM

On this date in 1978 I purchased my Shovelhead Lowrider. Thanks to Phil's advice I have it back to good running order. Rode it 50 miles one way to dealer I bought it from to get a part for a sportster I am working on. I don't know the milage because the speedometer has been replaced 3 or 4 times over the years. Current speedo showing about 50,000. I have ridden this bike across country 6 or 8 times. Had plenty of adventures and breakdowns.

Nice looking bike.  I have always liked the early FX / Low Rider bikes with the OEM Harley bags on them. I thought they looked so natural and could never figure out why more people didn't use them.

Here is a shot of the rear with bags. The license plate is an historic plate. Regular plate is $25 a year. The historic plate cost $30 and is good as long as I own this bike. I put this plate on in 2009 so I have been saving every year.  :teeth:

This '72 has been hanging in the air in a buddy's man cave for 20+ years. He passed away from cancer a couple of years ago and his wife decided it was time to get it down, go through it, and let his son start riding it. Took a bit...but she's a rider again.IMG_20210427_173110268.jpg

OK thank you Shovelhead Enthusiast's, past, present, yet to be shovelers,  even been there done that moving on to newer technology Hogs.
It has been a labor of love journey post the Covid shutdown to get this 1980 Flh Classic back to all it's glory. Had to experience one for myself just the way it is. 135-140 psi both cylinders went back to the factory hydraulics and the skinnier Andrew's  adjustables. Love the Sifton 112 Cobra The Deluxe Solo pogo seat I can flat foot it and back it out of the garage so good to go Caddy comfort. Sweet is all I can add. Note It takes ne 3 or 4 tries to fix issues but you can call me slow, my shop rate is $0/hr.
Thanks to those who contributed their unselfish time to help. :chop:  :gob:
