Seized swingarm pivot bolt on 82 FXWG.
« on: December 18, 2017, 01:40:44 PM »
Any ideas on getting it out. I believe it is seized in the bearings and the threads on the frame are stripped. I had this happen to me about 25 years ago on an old FLH I had and I can't remember how I got it out. Hell I can't remember what happened this morning.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
SR

Wasn't getting any response in the shovelhead section. Thought I would try here. Hope it's ok.

You may have to try and get the bike more on it's side, try and get penetrating oil into the bearings and swing arm shaft. If it is stripped out, you can try an oversize swing arm shaft.

Try a 50-50 mix of acetone and ATF, it's supposed to be the best penetrating oil there is.

Did you get the lock washer off ? Many years ago I was getting one of my Shovel swing arms off. The lock washer was so crusted on you couldn't really see it Causing me to use a wrong size socket. Striping the head of the bolt  But they can be a pain on their own !

After I got my 76 I went to change out the swingarm bearings and the shaft was so notched it took a lot of dinking around to get it out of those inner races.  Those were some of the most wrecked bearings I have seen on a still operating vehicle. The ones in the neck were not a lot better.
