31647-97 Screaming Eagle coil
« on: January 05, 2018, 11:43:07 AM »
I can buy a used 31647-97 Screaming Eagle coil for 20.00.  Is this the right one for my 1998 Dyna wide glide??
The original one listed is the parts book is 31614-83A.
What is better on the Screaming Eagle coils than the OEM one??.
Is there more volts to the spar plugs??
Another number that keeps coming up is 31653-97. I'm getting confused.
Thanks for the help.

I never buy used electrical parts. There's a reason you can't return new electrical parts even a couple hours old. A new coil is like $50.00 bucks.

Fits all 84-99 carbureted Evolution-equipped and 86-03 XL models with electronic ignitions (except 98-later XL1200S).

So it will fit.  I'm not opposed to trying a used coil out, if I can check it before I purchase.

Test it with an VOM, then because its a 40K volt coil, give it a real close visual inspection.  You'll be looking of any signs of burn through or damage to the housing.  Also there were two versions of that coil.  The ones with metal inserts in the bolt holes are to be avoided.

ON the price side, that's a $45 coil, new in the package.  $20 seems a bit much for used.

Stock coil will work fine.
