Dan Moto pipes for FXR
« on: January 07, 2018, 11:07:17 AM »
My brother is looking at Dan Moto 2 into 1 exhaust in brushed stainless for his 1985 FXRT.
I'm looking for any comments on these pipes as I have no experience with them at all. The Dan Moto website says they fit 1987 - 1994 but other sources indicate they fit 1984 - 1997...?

No such thing as a '95-'97 FXR. That other source is not credible.

The DanMoto pipes I've seen are are so short, they exit under your azz. Got to gas you out sitting at a stoplight. There must be a reason they are so inexpensive.  :nix: Now I have not ran one, so I could be way off, but I haven't heard of anyone running one. Know a lot of guys with FXR's & Dyna's.

Personally I don't care for short pipes. I have had really good results from longer 2:1 pipes.
Most have a really short rear primary tube, I changed from that style to one that the rear pipe extends forward around the cone and the collector is aft of the trans.
This lengthens the primary's and make more torque and more even front to rear balance the motor pulls better and runs smoother.
ThunderHeader makes one that works great.

For reference, this is the pipe being discussed;

That one looks longer than the other, that I saw. Might not be too bad.

I think my brother likes the price, considering the other brand names are generally $500 more!!!
But neither one of us knows anyone who has these pipes or has any good info on them. His FXR is stock with about 35000 miles. They are short but i dont think theyre too short...

For that price I'd almost be tempted to try them.
But I ran $99 drag pipes on my Twin Cam, so what the hell do I know. (Still got 'em, still want to put them back on.)

I like it, it fits my favorite recipe.

And the price is right.
My final concern would be mounting as a rubber mount is hard on pipes.
There may be issues with forward controls/pegs with the Dan-Moto since it says fits mids?
I know this is an issue with my TH.

Did you enjoy the Drag Pipes ? if you did , that's all that matters

I enjoyed the hell out of them, but my friends did not. As we all know, drag pipes do not make good low end power. That wasn't a problem for me, as I had no problem keeping the rpm's up to stay in the power band. Which also led to ear stinging song out of them. Hence, my riding friends not liking them after a while.
When I went to have the motor built, one of the first questions from the builder was if I was keeping those pipes. I said no, they probably aren't the best performer. He was very relieved. My friends were too, until they heard the Thunderheader at full song.
It's kind of amazing that those guys will still ride with me!

I did the testing of the XL version, at the link shown above. Also documented on our web site: http://www.hammerperf.com/ttxlexhaust.shtml#danmoto

The performance sucked.

The coating was awful. It would get marks on it if you looked at it wrong.

The pipes were very very thin. And when I pulled the pipe back off after the testing, I found this:

There's a seam in the pipe right there. It split right on that seam.

My personal opinion: dirt cheap, and not worth it.

The caveat here is that I've never laid eyes on the FXR version.

I have an FXR though ('90 FXRS). If you'd like me to test one and you're willing to spend the money, that can be arranged.

I have passed this along. I think it's a deal breaker. Sounds like another case of "you get what you pay for".

After seeing that crack, I have to say that for the price, they are probably not worth trying.
