2012 Road Glide issues?
« on: January 20, 2018, 11:27:18 AM »
Thanks in advance. Just sold my 2010 Ultra with 72k on it. I don't want another new bike, I took too much of a beating on this one selling it with that many miles.

Looking at a 2012 Road Glide Ultra with low miles, slip-ons and some extra chrome. Any known issues with that year bike?

Basically the same motor as my old bike ( I had a 96, this is a 103), so I'm familiar and comfortable with that aspect. Never had a Road Glide, though I drove 1 a few years ago and hardly noticed much of a difference from mine.

Other than the ugly fairing, it should be fine as long as you give it a good look over.

I have an 11RGU and have had no problems with it.  The only difference between the 11 and the 12 was the addition of a air dam which mounted to the engine guard and directed any air upwards.

Strongly recommend a MadStad windshield if you are going to be doing any long distance riding.  The stock windshield causes a lot of head buffeting at speed.

There was a recall on them for the rear brake switch which was too close to the exhaust but that was handled under warranty.

I personally think they are the best bikes harley makes.  the 11 is my second - had an 06RG before and traded it in for the 11 to get the ABS.

The only two things that I'd look at are, the cam chain tensioners, depending on mileage, that last longer on the hydraulic cam chests, and the compensator. I'd probably just replace that anyway, as if it's not bad, it soon will be. The newest HD offering is pretty good. Adding a GMR compensavor tray is good insurance too.

Some of the '12 baggers had voltage regulator issues.

Make sure the brake fluid has been changed somewhat regularly. The ABS pumps are sensitive to old brake fluid, and itís not a cheap fix.

I have a 2012 Ultra Limited, itís been relatively trouble free, besides trying to cook me alive.

+1 on the MadStad windshield.  The buffeting from the stock windshield will beat your brains out.  Luckily, I had enough brains left (barely) to get the MadStad.

I bought a used 2011 RGU a few years ago. It came with a Vstream windshield mounted and about 10 other windshields the previous owner had tried. the Vstream does not buffet and works well at all speeds. That is not to say the Madstad isn't great too, but this one is comfortable for me, less expensive and looks better (to me). Even Hoss would agree.  :SM:  I am 6' 1'' tall and ride fast lots. It doesn't seem to kick about in the wind or meeting trucks.

I find anymore that things look better on me than I do on them. I have a 2012 cvo road glide and think it looks pretty damn good. I know of no issues with the year model other than things like lifters, compensator, and the usual things like that. I know I never thought I would ride anything with a fairing but my Roadglide has changed that. It handles well and I don't even notice the fairing when riding it just kinda melts away. I never liked the batwing because it seemed heavy to me like a fat kid sitting on the handlebars. And the batwing sits too close to my face for my liking but each to his own. All in all if you ride one much I think you will love it. I have a 1999 roadking I rode mostly up until I got this roadglide  and It was an easy transition for me to go to a fairing

I'm on my 3rd RG with an '11. The only thing I've done is put a BDL Compensator on it and like it. I really don't care what I look like on mine, because....well I really don't care.

Buy it and ride on!! As mentioned the voltage regulator was a year specific problem..Cam chain tesioners are not an issue, they are the same ones that were in your 2010.
As for compensator, the only ones I have personally seen bad were ones that were run in a poor state of tune for extended periods or they weren't serviced properly...

My 2011 had the original comp in it when I sold it and never had a problem.

Oh yeah, buy a Mad Stad, you will be glad you did.

Very fair price for a 12RGU.  I was offered over $12 for my 11RGU with 20k on the meter.  At that price, you'll have enough left for a MadStad shield!!!

I have a 12 fltrx.  My other is a  02
Only issues I have with the 12 is I have yet to get rid of the buffeting over 70 mph.  Blurs my vision and tried the usual fixes.
Oh and the stock suspension sucks! lol
