88 c.i. to stage 2
« on: February 04, 2018, 05:19:33 AM »
..got a buddy here at the house with 05 FLHTC at home.. current set up K&N air filter /carb turned out approx. 2 3/4  to 3 turns no stumbles or run on with stock jets /paucho 2 1/2 straight pipes with 10 inch 1 3/4 perforated wrapped baffles on Vance Hines true duals/S&S conversion cam plate and oil pump/148 inner bearing/..he's now going to remove the stock cam this spring and definitely set on going with the S&S 509 cam and using the stock pushrod route.. I can't talk him into a 95 build with different modifications..he's wondering if using a 30 head gasket would benefit him a little more than stock OEM ?.....all thoughts on this set up greatly appreciated...

Just from the standpoint of improved combustion  due to improved combustion chamber turbulance, the .030 gasket is beneficial. Compression gains going from the standard .040 or .045 gasket to .030 will be very minor. Check / enter all of the specs with the Bigboyz compression calculator and compare your findings to the recommended compression for that cam. You will be able to make a better decision as to your next move.

You would gain approximately 10 PSI, or 1/4 point in static compression. Smaller cubic inches react less to the head gasket change than larger bores motors do.  I would leave it alone, the 509 will be a good upgrade, and he'll certainly notice the improvement.
