Cam 585 vs 584
« on: February 05, 2018, 04:24:17 PM »
:emoGroan: not another cam thread. So I’m planning for the winter build and trying to decide on cam direction. The rocket 584 exhaust lobe is very different from the s&s 585 which changes the LSA and overlap, other than that the what effect on tq curve does this have?  And the exh duration is the same as intake so no over exhausting ( though admittedly I really don’t understand that)

Dyna build hasn’t  happened yet, will build around the cam. I would like to go s&s 4” bore 100” and have the heads built to match the cam and compression set to match. Both of the cams can be had with ez start. I would think 10.8 compression should put either cam in a good place. I haven’t really decided on a porter yet. I have heard good thing about JC, which I believe I’m quoting. All these cool names keeps me guessing. I have talked with Matt as well, and there is always wfo Larry who I believe may favor the 585, his heads seem to perform well with the 585

I do have a 13222j bassani exhaust and BSstg1 air cleaner with power vision tuner.

Hope this helps

Yes.....JC is me

Whomever you have do the heads.....consult that individual

If using something from myself and I was stuck choosing between the two

I'd go with the Rivas cam

What do you think moving that exhaust lobe from a 110 cl to a 102.5 cl will do to the tq curve, if both cams given the optimal set up?

Or is it really not going to make much difference?

My assumption would be the 584 would have increased midrange tq and it would be more responsive to the throttle. It should “feel” more powerful due to how aggressive in comes “on the cam”  while being a little off the peak Hp number and a  more peaky curve/ narrower power band.
Considering that both cams would be optimized during the build

HP 103 is another,...... I would love to test back to back against the 585 cam I like the ex timing it better than the 585 .

I have tuned the Rocket cam it was nothing special Power wise seemed very much like the 585  had the right comp ratio and the heads where very nice units . Engine was a 107 S&S cylinder kit with the S&S CNC heads .

Thanks for the info, so there wasn’t much difference between to two? I like the closer lsa on the 584, I was thinking it might pull in a strong midrange. If you can dig up the Dyno on the 584 that would be great! You can send it to me in pm if you prefer
