Help identifying this on M8 Softail Tranny
« on: February 26, 2018, 07:39:51 AM »
Checking my tranny fluid on 2018 Heritage Ann 114 (no migration in first 1000 miles) today I noticed this empty threaded hole.  Nothing on the parts diagram.  Any help?  I don't remember seeing it there either empty or filled before.

I have a 2017 M8 Trike and it doesn't have that bolt hole must be a softail thing.

I certainly don't have a clue, but looking at the pix and comparing to the diagram, looks like the opposite side of the tranny ?  :nix:

Can't be the opposite side as the Engine Oil dipstick and the Neutral Indicator Sensor are on the same side as this mysterious hole.

it's the correct side. From what I can see, that threaded hole is not on your schematic...

Now, the real question...what's it for?

Is it a through hole?

It looks like a mounting hole for something, perhaps a bracket of some kind for guarding or some accessory.

Is there anything that passes near there on another model bike with that same tranny?

If I had to guess. I would say it's a blind hole for a bracket...Probably rear header on a different model...Softail perhaps?

same hole on this 107 pic?

     It'll probably have something to do with the mount for the softail preload adjustment knob

I have a similar threaded hole near the tranny on my 17 FLSTC. I went back to the dealer when I first noticed it and no one could tell me what is was for. I looked at other 17s still on the floor and they all had the boss but not all of them were drilled and tapped. That was almost a year ago and still a mystery. AFAIK nothing fell off.  :chop:

it's on all of them,, unused, the bikes that have the pre-load knob it is much easier to see, the bikes that don't there is a another cover under the "fake" oil bag and it is tucked back in there and hard to see, but it's there..

that's all I got to say about that..

The hole on the left is for a ground stud.  PN 66290-06 according to the parts sheet.  The hole on the right is just there for some that use an adjustable shock knob mount.
