Can detonation prematurely wear out the crank bearings and rods?

I just had a 4 3/8 stroker built by Darkhorse. They installed the Timken on the left side and bored the cases for the 4 1/8 Axtell cylinders. I should received it in a few days. Hoban Bros. are very informative and a pleasue to work with. Once the 117" is complete I'll give a complete rundown. I received the Axtell 4 1/8 cylinders last week and they are truly a work of art. Don at Dewey's heads did my heads and they are equally as nice. Don was also great to work with.
I just need some time. Gotta go out of town this week for work but should hopefully get on it next week.

Same story as Kleetus but with a stock crank, true/balance/pro-plug and weld. Already had the Timken but did have cases bored.  John at Hoban answered every email and phone call and sent me a new set of cylinder studs when I called and told him mine were not returned.

Same with Don on the headwork; he is still answering emails 1500 miles after the build.  I will do the same thing on the next one.

My vote is for Darkhorse.

I will pay a few more dollars to work with a top notch bunch of guys Like John Dahmer and the crew at Darkhorse.
Been down the bargain crank repair road before.

Been working w/ John @ darkhorse on my bud's 124 bottom end. That guy is a top notch class act. No BS, does great work, and never too busy to talk. Highly recommended!!

When Dave at JD's contacted Darkhorse for my crank Dave explaained to them what we wanted.
Darkhorse deliveded a crank to us and i have beat the snot out of it ever since on the street. my crank gets checked a few times a year for run-out and that crank has not moved.
Darkhorse crank has performed flawless and there is no other reason to go any where else even if it is cheaper. imo....

...except if you simply do not have the money.  Darkhorse was my first choice but the difference in price was a make or break if I would ride this summer...or not.  I was left wishing I could do business with Darkhorse.  But my grandmother taught me something.  She said, "Wish in one hand and poop in the other and see which gets filled first."

i agree with you but i have seen many people get screwed by the old saying you get what ya pay for. i know this is true im still feeling the pain.

Les just curious what you were looking for. The R+R cranks are $1600.00 and then you need the pistons/cases/cyls machined.
Darkhorse has cranks availible as well and/or can re-do your old in quick turn around...

If you can't afford to do it right don't do it period. Save your money until you can do it right or you will do it all over again. I know I went cheaper the first time.

Earlier I said "I also like the idea of a 5 piece assembly". BUT, also should have said what you just posted, because in the end Darkhorse is a better price.

The problem was with my winter engine overhaul is that I had a limited [fixed] budget.  The $500 delta between company "A" and company "B" was too much to absorbe.  I already had to comprimise on other aspects (i.e., SE cam plate and pump rather than Feuling plate and pump).  If you're asking what I'm looking for then it would be for the company I'd "like" to do business with close the price gap so I can still stay within my means and get the end products I want.

"You get what you pay for."  Ok...then maybe it's why sometimes we are not able to go out to a five star resturant and have to go to Giant Eagle and buy and take home and cook?  Yeah...I get it.  However, please don't judge just because I want to ride this summer rather than let the bike sit for a riding season while I save up the scratch.

Les if I were in the same situation as you were in, I would have done the same thing. I would lose my mind being down for a whole season.
You got to do what you got to do. I know what you went through and the strict budget you had to deal with on the rebuild.
I don't blame you one bit.

But on the other side of the coin you know what I went through with them. I truly hope things have changed with them.
But I'm done with them.

Thanks, Rick.  You were there blow by blow with me on that...including that we are both crossing our fingers that things will turn out fine for my situation and the decisions I had to make.  You even sent me free parts to help me out.

I know there are tons of guys out there in my same situation that need to cut here and there and make those tough decisions.  For those situations there are more options than always going with top of the line.
