Has anyone welded the motor mounts solid on a Dyna

I've got a wobbler. Nothing stops it. It starts around 80 and is down right scary at 90.

Good news is it keeps me from being a speed demon.

Anyway I've been thinking about welding the motor mounts solid, hoping that will once and for all stop the wobble.

Anyone done this? if so how bad does it vibrate?

I've owned Pans and Shovels so some vibration is not a problem for me.

I have several sets of mounts that are probably fine, but I changed them hunting the wobble.

Before anyone starts with the "have you done this and that" routine, yes everything that has ever been suggested has been done at least 3 times. Including having a trusted Indy look it over.

Weld it and get back to us then we will all know for sure.
Be sure to get both wheels plum and aligned before you weld.

My big concern is the swing arm through the tranny. Is that strong enough to hold up to a solid motor?

Why weld? Instead of making some solid mounts/spacers and bolt it down solid?

And not meaning to suggest this and that, but if half a million Dynas out there on the road don't wobble and yours does, you really think it's the mounts?

I can't figure it out, neither can a local shop.

Spacers?

I figure the easiest way will be to tack some plates on the installed mounts, remove them ans finish weld. That should keep the alignment intact.

This is a last ditch effort.

By all means if someone has any ideas other than head bearings, alignment, wheel truing, swing arm bearings, swing arm being straight, frame straight, fork tubes straight, True track installed, fork tube brace and i probably forgot something, I'm all ears and will try it.

Ohio HD

Take it to Steve Miller at HD of Cincinnati, on Tennessee Ave. If it has HD written on it, Steve knows about it.

I don't own a dyna. But there is a company called chopper hauss. that makes upgraded motor mounts for dynas. Might be worth taking a look.

If its the bike in your profile photo, The Apes would be my first red flag. Besides horrible aerodynamics, they also shift the center of gravity to the rear/ weight distribution. It may not be what you don't want to hear, But many a time I have ran in bad handlers, and if you can lay down on the tank though a corner & things get better, that's a sign. The factory sets them up & sells them as a safe handling bike, when chit goes wrong, work backwards.

FWIW, I had an '05 Lowrider with short apes and stock mounts and never experienced any shaking even at 100+.
Going down that long, lonesome highway. Gonna live life my way.

Not to nit pick on anybody's bike, but I guess that's what I get paid for. Other weight distribution issues I can see are the BIG (possibly heavy saddle bags, a king/queen seat with a relatively relaxed/ back leaning positions, all effect handling. These apes are on the taller side, and I'm assuming/ hope its a factory dyna wide glide?

Sell it. Full disclosure of course. Lotsa them out there. Appears you may have a "Christine".  As someone previously said, majority of these are fine.

Drivetrain  alignment, fall away, tire pressure/good tires , make sure spokes are right. Mounts new/good shape. Swing arm bushings in good shape/pivot bolt isn't loose. Suspension is in good working order and adjusted correctly. True-track can be looked at as well. I deal with lots of Dynas in my world as well as have several in the garage. All have been WELL in excess of 100 and zero wobble. I am anal about set up.
All that said- those bars are likely not doing you any favors. Can also remove bags and see if that helps (seen it before)

Did the same with stock bars, the goofy thing is if I put the O'l Lady on the bike it handles fine. No wobble, at least up to 100Mph.

How about tires? I had a bad Michelin Commander on back that wobbled worse the faster I went.

K4FXD

Several sets of tires, I do have cast wheels on it now. Wanted to eliminate a spoke issue.

I think it is a Christine bike like someone else mentioned.

I know of at least two other Dynas that have always had the same problem with the same effect from adding a passenger. one is a 2000 FXDX and the other is a 2001 FXD. Neither one bothered in hard cornering, just straight line wobble and grooves or rough road would set it off when accelerating.
Neither owner ever found a cure, the only good thing that ever came out of it all was the look on someones face when the owner would say " I'll race you but you have to wait while I run home and get my wife"

Would these help?
My Fatbob had bad vibes when the crank went bad but I noticed that more at low speeds.

A guy came into a dealers shop I used to go to complaining of a wobble. Mechanic looked at, nothing wrong. Owner took it out, came back in 2 minutes screaming it still wobbles. Shop owner took it for a ride, came past the shop at 80 MPH with his arms crossed his chest. Seems the bikes owner had a "death grip" on the bars which caused the wobble. :nix:

Already has tru tracks,

No death grip.

I don't have big enough kahonas to let go when it starts wobbling.  :bike:

I ride no hands all the time.

It's an 02, has the good crank. .001 runout measured when I installed gear drives.

Had this issue with my buddies dyna years ago, was a fairly new bike.
Dealer(s) checked everything
Nada
After much head scratching we found rust spots on the neck bearing races, probably from the factory.
Original owner had the same issue but never told us about it till years later when we mentioned it.
Thought it was tires or alignment etc etc.
Just thought I'd share for something to check.
Weld it up solid if you like.

New bearings and races.

Solid mounts are the only thing I haven't tried.  :banghead:

I don't know what about having the wife on does, but it will not wobble with her on the bike. I measured the drop with her and without, set my shocks so I had the same and it wobbled worse. I have put 100 pounds in the bags, and it wobbles. I suppose I could put a sand bag on the passenger seat.  :wtf:

Look into both wheel offsets, mostly the rear . My 07 fxstc was a pile of crap in handling with wind or gusts . Lots of wobble tendency with a 1/2" rear offset. In 08 they shifted the rear wheel with a different swing arm and it was much better.  It comes as a rigid mounted engine so that was ruled out. You won't like a rigid mounted A engine, that I can guarantee

Ever had the chassis measured by someone like Computrack? Could be twisted.

PoorUB

Any suspension mods? Lowered rear, lowered fork tubes? If it straightens out with the OL on board I wonder if the rears sits too high compared the the front and the geometry is off.
I am an adult?? When did that happen, and how do I make it stop?!
