As above '06 Softail.

Is the O'ring seal in the alloy take-off fitting replaceable or is a new fitting required? The male angle-plug on the hose looks fine.

Cheers, Pete,

If you need them quick as you are in OZ you can goto CBC bearings or a good industrial parts shop and grab Viton orings BS905 & BS109 they are not difficult to install if you take the tank of and turn it upside down. With the tank on you have to hold your tongue just right  :teeth:

Yes, it's tricky to do it with the tank on.  Use a mirror.  Shove the o-ring in, then with a pick get at least one side of the o-ring in the slot.  That helps the rest of it go in.

I replaced the orings in mine this winter.  The upper one was leaking when disconnected.

For the effort it took just using picks, not the $$$ tools, I would pull the tank.  On a bagger it only takes 10 min or less to do it.  You'll save way more time than that by being able to look into the fitting while it sits on the bench.

Instead of a mirror, you can use your phone, it even has a zoom mode to get a better look.

Replaced a couple of mine several years ago.  They're not garden variety O-rings,  iirc they're made of Viton for the gasoline.

Tell me about how hard it is to do with the tank on! My wife was essential because she is nearsighted and can see perfectly well at 6" - I need about 3 feet!

Just want to understand this better, because I'm very much into specialty tools to make each and every interaction with the bike the least amount of effort.  Are you saying there is a specialty tool out there for this?  If so, please point my nose in that direction.  (I always need something to make my future estate sale more interesting.)

Go to fueltool link Billy pointed out earlier in this thread. Get MC400.

You can do it with picks from Harbor Freight but the tool is much better / easier.

Thermodyne

The tool makes it into a one hand job.  But the tools ain't cheap.  You can buy the coupler for less than the tool and ring set

The lower ring is pretty easy; you just need to work it up into the second groove.  The top ring takes two hands.  You have to hold the plunger up in the body against the spring as you work the ring in between the body and the plunger.  And that little fat bastard of a ring can really try your patience.

PoorUB

Isn't the lower o-ring the one that seals when the fuel line is in place? The small upper o-ring seals when the fuel line is removed. At least that is how I remember it. You shouldn't have to replace the upper o-ring.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.
I am an adult?? When did that happen, and how do I make it stop?!

You are correct...........however if I have the tank off I replace both as it is not hard with the tank off and gives me warm fuzzy feelings
With the tank on I only bother with the lower one.
To hard otherwise

Or replace the whole QD with the fuel line kit from HPI.

Mine only leaked when uncoupled.  I rode it like that for a few thousand miles, but was always worried that it might start leaking when snapped in.

I need upside down bifocals to do it with the tank on but am getting better  :teeth:

On a side note, every time I insert the fitting I will put a very light coating of Clevite around the male fitting (not on the end though).  It helps to not bind the o-ring.
