It;s been a while since I have been here. I traded my low rider in on a newer TC88 and all of a sudden ,,well things change. But the good news is that I now own a shovelhead again. it needs some work but that's why I bought it, kinda like therapy. .....Do I have to use a year speciffic pinion shaft or can I use  an older or newer shaft mine is a 1978 and it seems like there are 3 different year groups

Cabbagecop

Three different ones. 66-69, 70-E77, and L77-84. The pinion must match the cam and breather gear.

Per Andrews:
Drive gears on 1977 and later cams are different! They have a 1.97 dia. groove cut into the gear face. Early and
late cams drive gears are not interchangeable.

You have 3 pinion shafts used in the 70 to 84 shovel .They used what HD called a communized shaft in 80 and later and it has to do with the oil hole and key way position . So 80 (I thought it was 81)and later uses the 24006-80 shaft and 79 and earlier uses the 24006-73. The 70 - 72 uses a side oiler don't have the # off hand.

Vern, You will need a 24006-73 or aftermarket equivalent. Seventy-three thru eighty all use this shaft. Bill

Hi Bill. I ordred the 73 shaft. Thanks

I believe the term Communized has to do that the tapper on the shaft is different too besides the oil hole & key location, and that was implemented in late '81. but yes, the part # is a -80?, Who know why, but it wouldn't surprise me if a few didn't get used earlier during that era.
