Hi all:

I've been using Lyndall brake pads on my two Softails for years now after reading (here, I think) that HD OEM pads shed dust that corrodes chrome rims and spokes, causing black spots.

Is that still the case or has HD made changes to solve that problem?

Are Lyndall pads still in favor?

TIA

I am still using the Lyndall pads in my 05. Swapped out the OEMs and haven't looked back 130000Kmi later. Have no idea if HD changed theirs, but I seriously doubt it.

Xtreme (HH) or Gold+ have more bite for the front,  Z+ is plenty for the rear.

I have read (definitely not verified) that H-D OEM pads are semi-metallic.  Yes they do produce dust that has metal partials and I suppose it could cause corrosion to nearby surfaces.  I used them for a long time but the last time I needed some I tried EBC Kevlar organic pads and so far so good.  They are fairly inexpensive and I have not seen the black dust issue some have reported.  However, organic pads will fade quicker.  I live in a flat area and almost always ride solo.  If you ride with an overweight passenger and haul a trailer they may wish you had something different coming down Pike's Peak.

I ride in the mountains every year and it never fails, I will be following some bikes, dragging thier brakes constantly. I can smell the hot brakes while I follow them. I ride a gear or two lower and rarely touch the brakes. You don't need anything special for brake shoes in the mountains, just learn how to operate the motorcycle.
I am an adult?? When did that happen, and how do I make it stop?!

You got that right. I tend to always ride a gear short when running up and down long grades, even short grades.
When my wife drove semi trucks, she was taught that you go down a grade in the same gear you used to come up the grade.

it can take everything you have.

I don't know if Harley had a problem or corrected it. I do know my wife rides a 2011 SuperGlide Custom. We opted for some chrome HD wheels rather than the factory EOM spoke wheels when we bought the bike. I've never had a problem with her chrome wheels pitting with the stock brake pads.

In fact, we recently put her bike in a Bike Show. I polished up the wheels and they looked brand new, even after 7 years and 60,000 miles.
