What year did Harley switch over to a 3/4'' swing arm pivot shaft ?

klammer76

I believe it was in 2002 on the flh line with the introduction of the new swingarm.

flht1550

Yes I think that's correct. Reason for question is that I want to install a 2002 touring swing arm on my 1984 FXR. Problem being the pivot shaft sizes. FXR 5/8" and 2002 touring swing arm is 3/4". Does anyone have a conversion to swap out the 02 swing arm bearings from the OEM 3/4" to the FXR 5/8". Or is the only option to have the FXR 5/8" rear transmission pivot hole machined to the 02 swing arm 3/4" shaft hole ??

koko3052

Only really three choices....bore out the transmission to use the 3/4" shaft.... make a couple of bushings for the 5/8" shaft or as you suggested find a bearing change.
Myself, I would opt for the heavier shaft & do the bore.

I thought that someone might have a spherical bearing swap to convert the 02 swing arm to retain the 5/8" shaft of my FXR trans. case.

There are several companies that offer this, and a couple more that offer knock offs of them. Look up Custom Cycle Engineering.

I made a 3/4" OD x 5/8" ID bushing to press into the 3/4" stock bushing.

I did have a swing arm that had all the stock bushing and spacers.

Could that be another Chinese knock off like the "Rocker Lockers" mentioned in a post I just read Under Rockout Rocker Products in the Vender section?

I see they say from Custom Cycle not Custom Cycle Engineering.  A subtle difference sometimes used to make you think it's one company but is actually two.

From experience, it is not a knock off.

Another possibility is the STA-BO III. Retains the 5/8" pivot shaft, but the 2002 -2006 swingarm can be used  in the earlier frame.

I messaged the ebay seller of the custom cycle spherical bearing kit and he could not verify that it would fit a 2002 touring swing arm.

What Ebay seller? The only link I see in this thread is to an Amazon seller.  Here are links to the correct item on the CCE website and to the same item on Amazon. Notice the part number.

If you meant the Amazon seller, its PowerSports Superstore. Nobody there will have a clue what this or anything else is. If you want technical support or customer service, see you local indy.
