What oil filters are you using? Went to the stealer today and a black oil filter was $13 and tax. Seemed a little high to me but I could be wrong. Just asking?

I just looked at HD web site and black TC oil filter lists at 9.95. Yep $13 is over charging. :emoGroan:

so that caught my attention. I too went to HD's website, searched "oil filter" and low and behold up pops a black oil filter for $9.95,, of course there si no part number, unless you click on the pic of it, turns out that is the 62700045 part.. the oil filter for the street 500 and 750.

I emailed a link to my HD DM, I told her that a multi billion $$ corp can, and should do better..

HD's website really sux!

Part of a Bait and Switch game.  Draw them in and when it's too late tell them "Oh, that's not for your filter".  Always show the lowest price and hide the explanation in the fine print somewhere else.   :banghead:

Question about the WIX. I looked up the p/n on the WIX website for two of my bikes.

1992 EVO: 57148
2004 TC: 57148

Same filter? Even HD has different p/n's for the Evo vs. TC. I thought the TC changed to a finer element, 10 micron or some such, and didn't recommend for use on the Evo. The specs on the WIX is 5 micron. So what's the deal? Why does HD not recommend the TC filter on the Evo?

JW, Ive been using a Wix 51215 on my `89 Softail for about 25 years or so.

I just did a filter lookup on Wix site and that is what it specified, maybe the site had a glitch when you checked.

Harley actually does recommend the TC spec oil filter for all their bikes that use the spin on filter, I have run them several times on my Evo with no issues, the sky did not fall like the internet forums would have us beleive... :soda:

Yep, I could not find the filter for late model big twins on the HD web site! :missed:

Cripes! I did a search with the part number on the HD site and it did not come up! :banghead:

The way I thought I understood it was the TC filter could be run on an EVO engine as an upgrade.  It was not recommended to run an EVO filter on a TC engine though (micron rating not sufficient)

I run the black wix. I get 5 at a time from a bud who has family working at O'Rielly auto and gets a discount. I know some folks order bulk from a fleet supply and get pretty good pricing on the Wix as well

We maintain 20+ industrial engines from SBC to Wauk at work; use WIX filters for all.  At home on our 2 HD TC's I much prefer the K&N with the nut stamped on the end of the can for easy on/off...

At one time I used Wix filter on my Toyota turbo diesel 4x4 , a long time ago , lol and a fellow at the parts house told me that there was a problem with the filters causing problems with stopped up cooling jets under the pistons resulting in a lot of damage. I certain that been resolved by now as I used the Wix on my bike now . .

Yep. Getting a conventional filter wrench past that crank position sensor is a PITA.

I can just wiggle my band wrench past the CPS on the '12, the band accepts an extension on a ratchet. I have to remove the CPS on the '01 to get the band wrench on. Anybody looking for that type of band wrench, this one was purchased almost forty years ago to change the smaller filters on four cylinder auto engines. I had to double clutch when I realized it's been that long that I have owned it.

The filters I use have the indentations on the end for a filter wrench with matching flutes. They may be 12 points. The cheap NAPA wrench will sometimes slip on the filter. It did when I took the first one off. The dealer may have over tightened it during my first free 1000 mile service. I borrowed a really good wrench from my indy down the street to get it off. Since then then I cut a piece of plastic from the bag i bring the oil and filter home in. I put it between the filter wrench and the filter, it takes up the slack and no problems since. I don't tighten the filters that tight anyway. I wonder if the dealer even changed the filter to start with. Either way either the factory or the dealer's mechanic put it on way too tight. The filter on my Cummins Ram was unbelievably tight on it's first change but that is common because Cummins paints their engines with the filters installed and the paint kind of glues them on. I don't think this happens at Harley.

Thought I was nuts when happened to me. Been a while, 2012 Cummins, same thing, was ridiculously tight.
Anyways, back to the topic on hand.

Hoss, your oil changes (if you do them) will become so quick and easy you'll wish you would have done it sooner.  :koolaid:

The remote oil filter seems like a lot of work to avoid dealing with the filter once or twice a year.

I have a cup style filter wrench with part of it cut out to clear the sensor. A 18" extension and it comes right off. Spinning the new on one by hand is easy enough. Hose everything down with brake clean when done. Dealing with three oil plugs, three holes to fill is more of a pain than the filter.

You guys would love changing oil on my Yamaha. It takes an hour to R&R the plastic body parts. Then you can hardly get to the filter because it is buried behind the header pipes.
I am an adult?? When did that happen, and how do I make it stop?!

PoorUB...sorry but I have to disagree with you on that. I installed my Moore Sensible Products remote oil filter in less than an hours time. It's a very simple install and once your done it's a time and mess saver.
I have no more oil mess to deal with at all on oil changes. I put an oil catch pan under the bike and another one underneath the remote filter...which is behind the rear passenger peg. You have clear direct access to the filter and no need to shoot any brake cleaner to clean up the oily mess that a filter leaves behind when it's in the stock location.

I used to run a relo kit; after spraying oil on the riders behind me going across I-4 in Florida and having to deal with some issues related to it, I was soured on it and got rid of it. To be fair, it was one of his originals when he first got started back in 2011ish. He sent replacement parts but I couldn't bring myself to go through that again.

It was Dan's kit that I tried, it leaked right at the fittings and couldn't be fixed no matter what we tried. He sent me a new piece, but I never put it on.  I no longer have the kit.
