Camshaft choices

1995 Heritage Softail.  Looking at cam choices.  Can buy a new SEH-4 for not a bad price.  Is this the same as a SE-4?  Not sure what difference is.  My first choice was a EV-27.  Both are made by Andrews I think.  Are they both BOLT IN?

Based on my own experience EV27 with stock compression ratio feels a bit lazy before revs get up. Then it goes really nice.

I replaced it with EV13 and it is - for me - a lot better.

EV27 and SE-4 seem very close to each other.

I'll do more research on the EV13.  You don't happen to know if SEH-4 and SE-4 is the same??

I cannot seem to find anything about SEH-4 cam, sorry.

I'm sure the more experienced members will chime in.



PS. If I recall correctly Andrews recommends 9.25:1 for EV13 and 9.5:1 for EV27.

One more question.  Was going to re-use the stock lifters if they Look/Feel good.  Is this a no-no??

My Evo had 46k miles on the clock last year when we changed the cam. Lifters felt and looked OK but we changed them nevertheless.

Typically I have been choosing S&S but there was a shortage and got Feuling lifters instead.

I don't know your mileage but in my case I wanted to have the peace of mind and changed them.

Quite clean it was in there.

SE-4 is a Screamin Eagle cam for Evo's. Never heard of an SEH-4.

Finn has it nailed. If you are doing no head/compression ration work, don't go crazy with "hot rod" cams. EV-13 will work OK with stock compression. Shave the head .050" and it will work better. For daily rider, low/mid power cams are easier to live with than higher RPM power cams in a rigid mount Softail.

I also have a 95 FLSTC bought new in 95. Put an EV-27 cam in about 20 years ago along with adjustable pushrods, Crane HI-4 ignition & carb re-jetting. Has 96,000 miles now & still runs great! So yeah, the EV-27 is a great choice IMHO,

The -27 and -3 are both fine bolt in cams, but even Andrews recommends increasing the compression ratio to get the most out of them. Do you have to? Not at all. They tend to make their torque north of 3000rpm, and if you are OK with that, then go for it. The good news is that changing cams in an EVO is easy as pie, so try what ever you want. If it don't like it, try something else. I must have had 7 cams through my '91 until I found the one I was the happiest with.

most were done with 45thou, my 1990 FLHTCU got a 40thou which was hard to find, thought about a 35 and blew it off

I'm running an EV-27 with Branch heads and cometic base and head gaskets which brings my cr to 9-1 on my 85 FXWG and the bike runs great with that combo.  :bike:

My last two bikes have been FX springer,94 and 95. I've run the 27 in both bikes, in the 94 I had a set of White Bros tunable disc, 2 into one exhaust and a Dyna 2000 ignition and a CV. In the 95 which is my currant ride I have the 27 with a set of Bassani Road Rage with and adapted Super Trapp disc setup and Dyna 2000 ignition and a 42 Mikuni Carb.

I played a bit with the 95 putting 10-1 Wiseco pistons and an EVO 46. This change didn't suit me for a couple of reasons. I had spark knock problem simply because that combo didn't suit my riding style, I just don't spend much time at 35-4000+ RPMs unless I'm out on the highway where it was great at 80 mph+.

This winter I'm pulling the 10-1 pistons for stock and the EV46 for an EV13. The 13 is a curiosity move and in no way a rap on the 27 cause if the 13 isn't doing it the 27 is going back in.

 :scratch: why not just change the cam,v-thunder 3030 would be a good choice,and there are a lot more options out there

Still looking at cam choices.  Anyone ever use Comp Cams and lifters.  Available here in Alberta Canada at JB powers. Are they good quality?

I have not used their lifters but have used, and am still using, their V-Thunder 3030 cam. I posted the result of a dyno tune a while back in the thread 80", EVO, V-Thunder 3030, Supertrapp and reposted a few years later as 1994, 80", FLHR, V-Thunder 3030, Supertrapp Supermeg

I fitted a EV13 to a stock evo with pipes and air cleaner and re jet CV owner said it pulled harder than his last bike with same mods and EV3.

I use the V Thunder cams in just about all the Evo builds I do.
I have one in my own bike.
I haven't used there lifters. I know a guy that gives me a good deal on Hylift Johnson lifters so I run those.  :smiled:
