2010 Ultra. Anyone have an accurate estimate of what it would cost to convert a solid mount Tour Pak to a detachable. Total for hardware AND labor.
3 years ago I would of done it myself, but health issues won't allow it anymore. It's expensive to be disabled.

You buy the hardware, study up on what it takes to install, buy the next door neighbor kid a box of beer, you sit on the box & tell the kid what goes where until it's done, then you both drink the beer! :SM: :baby:

What he said. ^^^^ It is trivially easy. I know because I just added a tour pack to my RK. You will need a four-point docking system to mount on the bike. You can find the parts cheap on ebay. You will also need to replace the bottom base on the TP with one that mates with the four-point docking hardware. The install is only a matter of nuts and bolts. Show your neighbor a youtube video of the install (there are several), and make sure you have the right tools. There's no reason to pay the dealer to do it. The parts on ebay will be around $100-150. If your TP has lighting, you will need to install a connector in line so you can just unplug it when you remove it. If you have any questions, you know where to find the answers.

Keep in mind you will need a place to store the TP when it is off the bike. I found a nice bracket for about $100. These are all over ebay too.

Finding a safe place to store it is the hardest part of the whole job LOL.

A buddy of mine has a RK with a Dragonfly fairing & a detachable tour pack.  He takes both off whenever he is riding around town.  He said once "I swear, both parts seem to acquire a new scratch or nick every single time I remove them!!" He had carefully removed both one time & leaned them against the garage wall temporarily before moving them to where he stored them.

Right then, his Wife opened the door & let his very rambunctious Rottweiler out. The dog came rushing into the garage to greet him & immediately knocked both pieces over scratching both quite noticeably.....

I'm sure the storage rack is great, but I just place my tour pack on a big box with a blanket over it, and tuck it away under the stairs in the garage. It fits  all the way under.

So, looks like the OEM hardware kit is basically $500. Anyone know of a quality aftermarket kit that will work for substantially less? I see a lot of them out there, but none are getting good reviews.

I'm not sure where you're looking, but here's one that looks good. As always, check fitment before you buy and make sure it's returnable.

Not very good engrish in ad.  I have used a couple of these sets as well as the tour pac detatchable mount, back rest and rear luggage rack. I found the attachments sometimes needed to be tweaked to fit nice but it was easy and no big deal when the price difference is so great.  I do have one set of Harley dockers that I bought from a forum member here that fit very well.  I have seen OEM sets used on ebay too if you don't want to try the low cost option.
