I got a old 1986 fxstc.and for it life 34yr. I have used only 20-50 dinisore oil,reg oil.well my wife bought a case of this 20-50 min. oil..and I wondering should I use it.what yall think of mineral oil...?

motorhogman

Is the bike constipated ?  Personally I've never used mineral oil in an engine.. The most common use for it is medicinal.   20-50.. ?  I guess some people use it from a quick search.. WTH.. try it.. If the bike runs with the same noise and temps as with what you've been using leave it in.. If not. drain it out..
where's the points and condenser ?<br />Tom / aka motor

Conventional mineral oils are simply one of the fractional distillation products from a barrel of crude

Dan89flstc

In motor oils, mineral oil is a classification for aviation oil with absolutely no additives, usually used for break in (there is now 20w50 in this classification, because in order to be multi grade, the oil must have additives).

Why don`t you just tell us wtf oil you are asking about?

Mineral oil is a term used today to designate all base oils other than synthetic or synthetic blends.
There are so many classifications of mineral based oils for combustion engines it could take up a whole book.

michael133

I said its   V-TWIN 20-50 SAE MINERAL; OIL FOR V-TWIN ENGINE.

Don D

It is fine for your bike, it is equivalent to HD 20-50 motor oil

When did you say that?

I was subtle yelling, like when Mom says she's not mad, just disappointed...

Oh so your mom was just disappointed? My mom was like this:

And that was just prior to whipping out the belt...

I think it's a good question, I was going to use a good 20w-50 mineral oil with all the zinc additives that the new oils are missing.  I just thought old simple combustion engine was made for mineral oil, so why run synthetic.

Again, I'm no expert and would like to hear what's best practice.
Thanks

I don't think it's practical to use synthetic in a Harley unless you are riding cross country.
HD's dirty the oil so fast, around town and doing short hops.
If your riding cross country you can take advantage of the extended oil change.
So even though a synthetic may be a superior oil, it's not if it is blackened.

Thanks burnout, this is what I've always done. At least l know I'm not too far off....

I like the syn because I have occasionally gotten caught in traffic and had the motor get pretty hot. I like the idea that syn breaks down at a higher temp than Dino oil, hoping I bought some extra protection. I also ride in extremely cold temperatures, and syn flows better at cold temps than dino does.
