Early XL compensator sprocket

So the '76 & earlier XL's had a compensated engine sprocket, '77 & later did not.

Questions:
Can the early comp sprocket simply bolt in to the later primaries?
Will it fit in the outer cover? (seems like same cover used on earlier bikes)
Any reason to add one?
Or to not?
