I am putting a stock HD springer on my project. I picked up a 21" wire wheel that has sealed bearings instead of the Timken tapered. I have a springer brake also. I need the spacer dimensions. I have the early spacer that goes through the brake bracket with the spring washer an into the seal but I think it will be too wide. I can't seem to find just how different the early is from the later. If I have the pics and dimensions of the brake side I can measure for the other side.

Burnout

i think you will find a springer wheel has a different wheel to hub offset.

I'm working on one now that I cant center the wheel in the fork, It needs the rim moved to the left to center the tire in the fork.
This is due to the speedometer drive pushing the hub to the right side.

yup, my original spoke 21" wheel was damaged by a pot hole, I ordered one from a company (not gonna share) said it was the correct offset for a springer, it was not, I had to get the wheel relaced to make it fit correctly
I can if you need get some measurements from the hub to the fork on each side if that will help

This one is a 92 softail.

I think the brake rigging is the driver in this situation. The off set difference probably is because of the issue that I have with the bearing distance. I have the wheel mounted in the springer but I had to make new bushings for the brake side and one for the speedo drive side. It appears to be centered well. I don't have the offset dimension for the wheel that I have. I'm not sure I will even deal with the offset unless it really is a handling issue.

Racepres

FWIW We have used a WideGlide 21" in an early FX Springer... The wheel ends up offset, but it will work, just fine, until I relaced one with the proper offset...all it does is center the Tire [rim]

Burnout

Yes, the wheel wound up 3/16" off center.
I'm going to move the rim over, I just hope the used rim doesn't turn into a potato chip when I release the spoke tension.

The good old FSM (at least the one I have) lists the offset for laced wheels.

FXSTC: 1.58-1.66 in
FXSTC: 1.25-1.37 in
FXSTS: 1.38-1.46 in

I have all kinds of FSM's but I only go to 95. This wheel is from post 2000 or later.

JW113

Since I don't have a 2000+ FSM, can't say for certain, but the only difference that I've found between the 80s/90s laced wheels and the 2000+ is switch to sealed wheel bearings and different axle spacers. The wheel offset seems to be the same. But if some kind soul has a 2000+ FSM, it would be nice to know that for sure.

From 2001 Service Manual: Lay a straightedge across hub brake disc flange and one of the marked spoke groups. Measure distance "A" from the straightedge to the location shown... The FRONT WHEEL offset dimension, distance "A", must be:

  • FXST, FXSTD, FXSTB: 1.640-1.660 in
  • FXSTS: 1.440-1.460 in
  • FLSTC, FLSTF, FLSTS: 1.272-1.292 in

1988-95 FXSTS used speedodrive as left spacer.

1996 FXSTS was the only year with steel hub and no speedodrive left side, the speedodrive was replaced with OEM 40910-84B which was 1.250". I measured the speedodrive to be 1.275".

For 1997-99 and new alu hub, the left side spacer was now OEM 43683-97 which was 1.340".

For 2000 left side spacer was OEM 43683-00 and measured .986".

There were 3 right side spacers available, 44029-88, for 88-96, 44029-97, for 97-99 and 44029-00 for 2000.

I have not been able to find the stepped dimensions for 2 of these, it would have been of great interest if anyone could help with these measurements.

For 44029-00 the measurements are .838" OAL, length of the stepped portion .060", large OD of the stepped portion 1.118", small OD .992".

^^ Positive the Springer my Youngest has, sports a Steel hub, with speedo drive as Spacer..
Could easily accept Any dual flange hub, laced with Offset..

Would your 1996 right side spacer (44029-88) measure 1.268" o.a.l, and length of the large o.d. portion (oil seal end) be about .490" with an o.d. of 1.125"?

not sure I can measure that precises on the oil seal end, I can on the right side spacer  :embarrassed:
I can measure from the wheel hub to the fork with some accuracy - sorry I don't have any precise measuring tools   :emsad:

Thanks XL for that info.I feel pretty good, I was dead on for the left side and real close on the right.

I guess 44029-88 and a lathe, could cover the 2 other versions 😊

Finishing up an 88" to 95" build on this springer. If you need any measurements PM me. It's an FLST, with a  16" front wheel.  [attach=0]
