Got a call from a guy, telling me that the bike has begun to activate the starter all by itself, both while running and at standstill when ignition ignition switch is powered on.

I seem to remember a case like this years back, I think it was corroded starter relay or corroded handlebar starter switch. Anyone else experienced this? Is it possible at all that a starter solenoid could behave like this?

I guess the starter relay can power itself if corrosion makes an electric leading path between 30 and 87?

Correct, and I have seen both- the bad starter switch is just as common as bad starter relays- altho the relay is so much easier to change, I always try that first :)
Ignorance is bliss, and accuracy expensive. How much of either can you afford?

Usually a few quick flicks of the button will tell you if it's sticking.  At least that's worked for me.

Good one. Pinched wires can absolutely behave intermittent against each other.

If the starter solenoid sticks, turning off the switch will not make it stop.
