Greetings,

Just changed my cams to Woods 222's from Andrews 57's.  Fortunately, was ok with not needing a shim for the sprocket (think I have that correctly termed).  What happens if a shim is needed but not used?  Does it wind up destroying the engine somehow?

Keeps sprockets in alignment. I suppose after time (and misalignment) excessive chain wear could occur.

Seems logical it would cause the chain and sprockets to wear more on one side and maybe make it a little louder but it seems it would have to be pretty bad to do any serious damage.  Do check though and those shims are sold individually or in a variety kit.  The kit is nice if it saves you a trip back to the dealer and you can share your leftovers with your DIY buddies.
