Have a 2009 cvo road glide. Have a strange noise like a soda can full of rocks when bike is running, in gear and clutch pulled. Also still had the noise when running down the road just not as pronounced. Bike is quiet in neutral. We thought it was possible main gear bearings. Took apart the primary, no metal, no metal in the trans oil either. Had one bearing in the primary that might have been a little sketchy but not enough that we thought that would be the culprit. Trans looks good and the main bearing seemed ok, but while we have it apart are going to replace since the stock were the plastic units. Kind of at a loss on what the prob might be. Clutch looked good other than a plate that was a little blued. You cannot see attachments on this board.

The primary bearing race in your hands should answer your question.
Not to mention the bearing itself.
Holding a grudge is like taking poison expecting the other person to die.

Was a auto HD primary chain fitted and tight? That may be your prob

Might want to open the right side cover with the clutch cable and check for metal dust over there.  We've had some trap door bearings fail that sounded like this.

Seen a half dozen or so like that. They will be noisy. Replace it and the bearing.

:agree:  Never mind the trap door.  I couldn't tell what the photo was.

In the process of replacing. Waiting on parts unfortunately. Btw you did my heads John.

Wouldn't the primary race make bad noise all the time? He says it makes noise only with clutch pulled & in Gear.

While the IPB race is shot.  It's not the source of the noise.  With the bike in gear and the clutch pulled in and having noise, the mainshaft is not turning.  That race is not turning. What is turning is the clutch basket on the clutch hub.

smoserx1

And he said in neutral the noise went away, and the mainshaft would be turning in that case, right?  He didn't say clutch in or out in that instance but with wet chutches doesn't the mainshaft try to keep turning even with the clutch in due to the surface tension of the primary lube?

i think the same,my whole shovel clutch spins with the clutch lever engaged. thats why i have to be slightly moving to find neutral

"still had the noise when running down the road just not as pronounced. Bike is quiet in neutral."

This is likely the issue with the IPB.   The sources are likely different.  Tho one could have caused the other.

I tend to agree.  There's too much going on to be Just one of the 2 bearings.  Maybe the original problem was a tight primary chain and it killed both bearings.  It's easy enough to check.

It seems to just be making noise when the clutch is let out not when the clutch is pulled.

Clutch hub bearing feels good & smooth. No catches or rough spots with clutch plates removed.

This is different and is a good indication of bad IPB which you have.. Real hard to diagnose if stated symptoms are not correct.

Then you title is incorrect. You stated.
