shorting a speedo cable

Has anybody ever tried shortening a speedo cable from a front wheel drive ? How did you do it ?I need a cable that is 18-24 inches .

I made one years ago, took the inner cable to my local speedo shop, he had a fixture to make the square end needed to fit the drive gear, took all of 3 minutes.
