I have a clutch perch for a 2009 touring model (came with parts when I converted to Brembo brakes on my 02 FLH). I run +2 KW sweeper bars and am going to be replacing my +3" 38649-98 clutch cable. Looking to use the newer (Teflon lined) 08 up cable, 38649-08a. 08a cable is much cheaper priced than the -98 also. Anyone know if there are any issues with doing the swap? 07 models used a one year only -07 cable for some reason. The thread pitch is 5/16-24 for the clutch cable in the 5 speed right side transmission cover. Is the 6 speed cover the same? Length and travel of the cables the same?

Thanks,
klammer

Can't answer many of your questions for the thread pitch, perch design etc, but the stock cable for your bike has become pn 38667-00, assuming it is an electra glide model.  I found that out last year when the one on my 99 frayed at the lever attachment.  IOW the version ending in -98 is no longer available.  The 38667-00 version fit mine fine, is Teflon lined and only cost about $35 (the old one was about $50).

Inner cable length is different - shorter on 5 speeds than 6 speeds, so you may run out of adjuster, using a six speed cable on a five speed bike.
Ignorance is bliss, and accuracy expensive. How much of either can you afford?

:agree: and you will run out of adjustment!
Don't ask how I know this  :hyst:

Thank you guys, that is what I needed. From the Magnum Shielding site I saw that the travel length for the 2002 cable is 2 13/16". The travel length for the 2008 cable is 3 1/2". So I knew the 08 was longer but was unsure if that was due to attachment point being different on the lever which I now know it's not. I also run a Muller arm so travel is critical (can't have any less).

Thanks. Yes, Electra Glide but running the +3 38649-98 side car cable with my Khrome Werks 2+2 sweepers. I believe there are some 38649-98's still out there. I'll look for an after market +3 teflon lined cable. This is just a preventive maintenance thing right now for winter.
