I installed the 72 to 78'ish hand controls on my Panhead.
I haven't been able to get the clutch (mousetrap) cable adjusted.
I'm thinking there is a part missing inside the perch??
Some one told me these is supposed to be a slotted cylinder shaped part on the cable end where it goes into the perch.

Anyone have a picture of the clutch lever assm / cable area?

Ideas?

I have those parts in place.
The section in question is where the cable first makes contact with the lever/perch.

One of these 2 might fit, if you cut a slot with a Dremel tool. Barnett cables are the supplier of these cable enda.

JamLazyAss

I have a brand new Barnett cable. So you are thinking one of those might work?
You might be right. So I would have to slot it then place it over the cable small end towards the lever I'm guessing.

Thats's right, the aftermarket hasn't been consistent when sizing early cables and lever clamps.

JamLazyAss

I agree with that.

What is the catalog you show?
I tried looking on-line but not much luck.

Catalog is Motorcycle Storehouse in Netherlands, Europe, but Barnett Cables are at: https://www.barnettclutches.com/clutch-components.html
Page 46 in their pdf katalog.

JamLazyAss

That's where I'm looking but it shows Milwaukee 8 clutch plates.  :banghead:

I do have one other question that's probably dumb...
Is this cylinder part that I hope to buy supposed to replace the one that's on my cable already, or slide over the existing one?

Slide over the existing one.

On Barnett Cables web site, they have a contents list on the right side. A bit down there, you can find a downloadable pdf catalog.

JamLazyAss

This is as close as I find.
Everything after pg 46 is just spreadsheets of part numbing.
Maybe I should try to order a catalog.

FSG

one of these on Pg 45 might get the job done with some massage

Go to the Barnett website and download the PDF catalog. On pages 43 & 44 there are fittings that they are calling "split sockets or casing stops" with the splits already in them. If no joy there perhaps give Barnett a call, let them know what you're tryng to accomplish and see if they can offer any advise.

Are you using the mouse trap or the bracket that mounts on frame downtube?

kd

^^ This ^^  The bracket became the most common as OEM and "upgrade from the mousetrap that seemed to be so hard to keep in adjustment.  That may be the reason your cable is different.  Barnett should be able to tell you if you needed to order a different model.  (or just change over to the bracket if you aren't all hung up on year correct OEM appearance)  Of course that means you need the short dogleg lever on the transmission too.

Attached is a picture of the actual problem. The cable doesn't stop at the perch as it should. Even my Barnett cable does this. I'm going to try calling Barnett and see if I can order a couple of those ferrules.

mikes garage has a you tube video on how to adjust the mousetrap

that cable has been put in wrong..the metal cyclinder part of the cable between the anchor point and the lever should be on the opposite side. thats what the picture shows

It was.
Soon as I pull the clutch lever, it pulls the entire cable in.

Well the cable is not for the early clutch handle assembly then.  If the ferrule pulls through the holder in the clutch handle bracket like that it is clearly the wrong size.  You may be able to rectify it with an adjuster thimble like FSG posted but I will bet the hole in the bracket for the outer cable holder nipple is not threaded for one and it will have to be able to slide into that hole and retain the threads to allow some adjustment.

Do you have a picture of other end of cable at mousetrap?

JamLazyAss

I'm getting to the point where I might just toss the mouse trap.
Can I put a eliminator on the bike with rigid frame and a horse shoe oil tank?
