Just wondering...

Got a 1984 Shovelhead with the rotary top transmission.
Other than the obvious things like linkage, what would be required to replace it with a ratchet top transmission?

I could be wrong but I believe the 1970 and up into the early evo's is the same gearbox with different controls as you mention.  The early pre ratchet (jockey) lids fit. The speedometer ratio may be different but I only remember a couple rates of speedo gear sets. The course and fine.

As far as I see any problems with a cow pie trans is the external linkage. There are new arms made that eliminate most of the slop.

Ratchet tops are fiddly and can be troublesome to get right.
They don't call me Ironhead Rick just because I'm "hard headed"

Jam, Forward controls or midshift? Tranny itself would be a straight swap. If forward controls you'd simpy need a 33851-52 shifter arm.

I think he may mean getting the shifter forks aligned and spaced correctly to the drum?

This is what I was thinking.
Forward controls.
Thank you.
