I want to put hard bags on a 1990 FXRS using the SUMAX brackets. According to SUMAX the brackets only fit 1991-up FXR's. Anyone know what's so unique about the 1990 (-84 Frame) and the 1991 (-91 Frame) that make this impossible? I asked SUMAX if the brackets would fit a 1990 FXRS and they said no "the frame". According to the parts book there was no mid year frame change. The bike is titled 1990 and it has a splined output on the trans main shaft.

If SUMAX brackets are out, anyone have a solution to hard bags on a 1990 FXRS?

Regards,
PHR

Look at the rear fender struts and upper sock mounts of both year groups of frames.

All I have are photos of a 91 and they look the same to me. What do you see?

What kind of bags are you trying to install?
I have these on my 1992 FXRP, fit perfect, very well made, brackets available.

And you can't find pictures of other years of the FXR?

When I look up FXR fender struts, the same part number is listed for 187-1994. These are aftermarket.  :nix:

Hint:

Earlier are curved. Later are straight.

Did the relocate passenger foot pegs in 91? If not the only change I find is the Jiffy stand.

Up until 1987 FXR's had the shocks in a more upright position, then the angle was changed, the top mounting location a little forward. Probably why the part numbers for 1987-1994 are the same. If you don't have the correct mounting hardware, and a brace that goes around and under the back fender to tie both sides together, then make sure to bolster the inside of those hollow struts.

FLH touring bags are going to be too big on the FXR frame. Will reduce you to one up riding. Cop bags, Clam Shells, Vert bags or T sport bags are better choices

2 up rides fine.

You cannot see attachments on this board.

:agree:  This is an early Low Rider / FX frame but still relevant

Not to derail too far... But with enough 'engine-uity' you can make it work... I retrofitted 2014+ bags on my '97 FLHR without much trouble. Obviously a different animal, just bend a bracket here and a spacer there and you can make a lot of things work.

Good luck

Panhead Red, which struts did you end up with?

The original 1990 Struts on a -84 frame. I made SS spacers .6"OD x .328"ID x .45"long and the rear bracket fit the turn signal hole in the struts.

I used a Signal Dynamics Back Off Tag Frame for the turn signals relocate. I netted an extra brake light and running light as well

I swapped out for Electra Glide fender struts and mounted the bags with the original decker brackets.  That was back in 1980 so I don't remember if I had to use spacers.  I seem to remember only washers to prevent the fender from cracking with the vibration of the loaded bags.  Unfortunately I was always too busy riding and partying to take any pictures.  The one pic I posted was given to me. I know it was an easy job to mount them in my case.

I should have mentioned that my rear fender was a reversed dresser front fender so it would have been wider and similar to the stock Electra Glide rear tin.
