I just ran across this while searching for hard start issues with the 124. Darkhorse has a disclaimer about running the motorsprocket and easy start cams.  Has anybody else experienced this?  I'm having a hot restart issue where is just seems to crank and crank.  Thoughts?

How the heck can the motor sprocket cause that ??

I've read that on the Internet before. Unless John @ Darkhorse tells you this, I wouldn't see it being a real issue. As I remember reading it, they determined crank deceleration detection based on the ECM reading this causes issues with starting when using Easy Start cams. I can't see how Easy Start cams has anything to do with ECM timing and startup.

I found it right on the DH website so I'd consider it legit?  I'm going to uninstall it to verify.

I saw it on a resellers website. Before you go to all of the trouble to remove it, I'd call them and explain what you have going on. Let them tell you it's the problem.

Added: I just did see it on their web site. But I would still call them and explain the situation.

I would think if the problem is the lack of crank deceleration to the ECM, then causing a start issue, that the timing at cranking speed could be adjusted. At least I would plow that ground first.

Crank position done with CPS.  Engine cycle position done by detecting the deceleration of the crank on compression stroke.

If it is a hot start only issue.  I doubt it has to do with how the ECM knows position.  Even with easy starts.  A hot engine should have more compression and slowing of crank should be more pronounced then over a cold engine. I would bet the problems seen are not dependent on engine temp.

This can always be checked by making sure injectors are popping and you are getting spark during this crank and crank period.  Leave plugs in for this and use a extra plug.

I've ran the S&S 124 with the Darkhorse compensator for about 15000 miles now.  We've had no starting issues.  I have an aftermarket ECU, easy start cams and SS heads with no compression releases.

The title of this thread and even the discussion is misleading and technically wrong.

No dog in this but did not understand how an S&S 124 could have issue with a compensator so I went to the source and looked at what Darkhorse says about their compensators.

Bottom line. Darkhorse says NOTHING about any version of an S&S 124" engine. In fact they say nothing at all about displacement or even manufacturer of the engine. They do call out S&S Easy Start cams, but  again they can be used with any displacement TC engine to include those built on Harley cases.

Lots wrong in this thread and unfortunate more members here will see the title of the thread and continue to perpetrate more BS. Would be nice if an admin would edit the title of this thread to something like 'DH Motor Sprocket and Easy Start Cams'.

Looks like the title got renamed as you requested!

This has been an issue and on their website for quite some time. Several years as I recall. Whether it's your issue, Idk or whether it's an issue for everyone with easy start cams. I know people have had verifiable issues with the two. It's why that disclaimer is there. They wouldn't put it there otherwise.
