I've only owned shovels and Evos.  Sportster, FXR, and two wide glides.  I'm 45 and my back ain't what it used to be.

Found a real low mileage one set up for a tall guy (like me), and price is around 14k.

I just know I need something easier on my body.  I generally like the looks of these and Street Glides.  I've never ridden anything newer than a 1995.

Happy to hear any thoughts.

Main questions are, is this a good year?

Changeover year for anything big?  I.e. avoid at all costs...

Can I buy any type of factory warranty?  Are those worth it?

Hi 1982fxr

I'm speaking from a 2023 ultra but pretty similar.
You will love the civilized nature of the engines now. Still a Harley, but very reliable, and strong.
You may not love the way they are built now - more like a car than a motorcycle, with lots and lots of wires. You do adjust though. All those wires are doing stuff!
You will love the handling. They just handle so well compared to early Harley's.
You will hate the suspension (if it's standard). Nothing more money won't fix.
If you're tall - get highway pegs.
You may love the way they feel so light while underway. Anything over 5kph and they feel light and nimble.
You may not like how heavy they feel when stationary.

Anyway ... that gives you a few thoughts. Hope it helps.

Thanks
Pauly

If your back is as bad as mine, I would suggest Progressive suspension front and rear.
I just did just that to my 2022 limited. The ride is soft on my back. Worth the cost.

I'll add that it's the standard model.  Which as far as I can tell is fine with me.  Never cared about a radio or any of that crap.

So are Electra and street glide basically the same?  Same chassis and all that?

calif phil

Yes same chassis, although the FLHX will have shorter rear shocks.

You'll find that even though it is heavier than your other bikes, it will steer lighter once underway, even at low speeds, maybe even more so at low speeds.
I'm not aware of any outstanding issues with that year.
If you can get an extended warranty on it, it may or may not be worth it. Some people find them comforting, others find them not worth the money.
The stock suspension isn't great, but it may work for you, adjust the shock and keep track of settings to see what works better. Ultimately, new shocks might be the option you prefer. Luckily, only about 10 or 15 choices, with as many opinions on what works best. Being tall, you can get away with longer shocks, more travel. Have you checked to see if they've already been replaced?
Good luck, hopefully you'll like riding it. It is far different than any of the naked bikes you're used to!
If the government gives you everything you want,
it can take everything you have.

Great bike IMO. The standard is probably the best bang for the buck in the touring line up. Good luck if you pull the trigger.

I put rwd rear shocks, and Bitubo front cartridges in mine and it now has suspension that feels like it should. Really transformed the bike.

14K is a great price for that year bike, even better that it has low miles.

Hi again,

I would change the following;

Plastic intake manifold with se or s&s 55 mm alloy one (no tune required)
Front and rear suspension - lots of options but buying good will transform the bike
Adjustable push rods (for those times you want to look in the cam chest)
If it has nav, get one of those link plugs (installed behind the fairing) and an oppo wireless thing that'll give you apple carplay nav (obviously only if you have an iPhone)

I think everyone wants you to buy it haha.

Thanks
Pauly

Oh to be 45 again! My back certainly ain't what it used to be either! Anywho, you'll be happy with all the 21 will give you that you haven't experienced with what you have been riding.
