Got told that The TC drops exhaust valve seats commonly. I have never heard about this. Thoughts ? BS or not?

Gday Jsd,
If that was the case, I reckon there'd be a bunch of evidence on this site. I think (from memory) I've heard of it a few times but certainly not common.

Thanks
Pauly

The biggest problem I have heard of and had happen with my 2005 TC was the failure of all of my valve seals. I was burning basically no oil in 5,000 miles. Then at 10,571 miles I started putting out a smoke trail so heavy that people behind me on the highway could not see.
The dealer refused to fix it under warranty but did offer to turn my engine into a 95 cubic inch for $1,000.
It was shortly after this (2006-2007) that I did my first ever engine rebuild and did not use one HD part while doing it.

That's never been a problem with the TC's.
The M8's had a problem with loose exhaust seats when they first came out. Something you need to look for when you take those heads apart for service.

I had an 2002 FLHTCUI that hung the rear exhaust valve when the valve guide dropped @ 133,000 miles.  It did it on the last day of the 7 year extended warranty.  The rear head was replaced under warranty.  I only put another 2,000 miles on it before I traded it in on an 2009 FLHTCU.  For some unknown the '02 seemed to run hot after it was fixed but the dealer could not find anything wrong with it.  I've had no problems with valve guides on the '09 or my current '14 TC and both went over 100,000 miles.  All my bikes were completely stock down to the air cleaners and exhaust.

Years ago when I had my 02 FLHT, I had returned home from a few thousand mile bike trip. The bike sat in the garage for a few days, and then I went to move it. I fired it up & it made a horrible racket from the rear head. Turned out to be a stuck exhaust valve. Luckily it decided to do it in my own garage & not during the road trip.

How many of those TCs were 2005s?
It was here on HTT in 2006 that I learned about the 2005s having cheap Chinese valve seals. Hence the reason for the failure.
It was a 2005 year and very early 2006 problem.

Never had a seat problem, unless the owner had "Tinkeritess".  :emoGroan:

Well, There was a seat problem that a customer made for himself. He wanted to install compression releases himself.   Tinkeritess.

As Agent 86 would say, "Missed it by that much". :)
Ignorance is bliss, and accuracy expensive. How much of either can you afford?

I know a lot of guys who ride TC's here in Tn. and Michigan probably 60, none of them lost a valve seat. If it's so common someone post all the failures reported here.

Between my wife and I, we have had 10 TC's from April Fool's Day 2000 to now. Hers have stayed mostly stock, mine are almost always modified. Three of these have run between 90,000 and 121,000 miles with never a valve seat problem. Total miles over 500,000 for us.
