I have a 91 fxr I just purchased. Dropped the transmission oil and it was white with metal flakes. Put new in, ran it 50 miles shifts great dropped again still gunked. What would be a good flush? Thought about atf, run it for a bit and drain again?

Maybe drag a magnet through the old oil/metal, to see if the shavings are steel (bearings/gears) or aluminum (case).
That may give an indication of what is happening.
After a couple flush/ride sessions, I'd pop the top off and inspect.
Ignorance is bliss, and accuracy expensive. How much of either can you afford?

Sounds like the previous owner may have heard some funny noises and bailed.  I hope it wasn't someone you know keeping secrets from you.

No it was a facebook market place buy. The kids of the dad who was the orignal owner selling it. They seemed less the knowledgeable talking with them. The price was fair enough for any work it make cause me. The amazing part to me is the transmission does shift increadably well.

The Harley 5-Speed trans is pretty bullet the proof. For yours, the weak links are the springs in the shifter pawl and the plunger on the pillow block. For the plunger, the tip is sort of shaped like a blunt pencil as it comes from the factory. Over time its nose will dull and its spring will weaken. This makes shifting a little sloppy and some gears harder to find. The knee jerk reaction from the online community is to advise adjusting the pawl. The fix is to update the drum, blocks and pawl with used stuff from a late TC. Will work better than Baker stuff costing much more.

Remove the filler plug and take a pic of the underside of the plug.
