I heard one time that mineral spirits was the same thing as charcoal lighter fluid. I personally have not compared the two... I just stick a propane torch in the coals to get them started, and then blow air into them using a hair drier. They get hot fast !

The hair drier doesn't get used for anything else. Good thing because it smells like a BBQ. LOL.

Try one of these!  I originally made one years ago.  Uses newspapers instead of liquid fuel.  You'll never use liquid fuel again!  Do a google search on "charcoal chimney"

Well, it's much safer than gasoline! Seriously, it'll make your food taste like kerosene. You'll only try it once; it tastes like crap!

Roll-up some C-4 into a snake and light it, It'll get them charcoals going.

k-1 (or Jet A) would be better as they both have the sulphur removed.  As Shovel said, gasoline is dangerous cuz it's flash is so low it ignites too easily for this application.

What he said or a weed burner works very well.

Get the chimney.  Here a trick. Fold one sheet of a newspaper several times, with the folds running verticaly from top to bottom.
Tear it down the middle and roll up the two halves.  Put that under the chimney torn edges up.  All of the torn edges will give you a hot fast start then fall apart in time for good air flow.  Don't over fill the chimney about 1/2 to 2/3 full to start with.  Add more once things get going.

Use a chimney a few times and you will be able to tell when someone is using lighter fluid at 500 yards.

Odorless my azz, and you can taste it.

Phu Cat

Propane doesn't leave a taste and ya get nearly instant heat.

Switched to gas last summer.  Not bad for stuff like fish and chicken, but for just a big ol' steak I'll take a charcoal grille every time.

why not buy the charcoal with the fluid built in, ...

You can use anything you want.   Just be sure any charcoal starter is completely burned up.  Should only have ashy coals left.       Marty
