Been some time since it ran. Looked under the 82 flh and oil puddle under the hose. Definitely oil. Why would it all of a sudden pike?

Just sumping. It's normal. Don't add oil (or very much) when starting. The oil is in the cases. I always place a pan under mine after a long time without starting.

I sometimes clamp off the feed line to the pump if the bikes going to sit for a while. I put a strip of painter's tape across the dash with a reminder.

Never happened before. I'll put a pan under when I start it.

The first time it happened to me it scared the crap out of me.   Hasn't really happened since I installed the S&S long block in 04, but I always put a pan under it or back it out off the concrete for the first start of the season anyhow.

If you ever have the opportunity to remove the oil pump in the future, you can lap the check ball seat with valve grinding compound, and put in a new check ball and spring. That should stop the leaking when it sits. The link below it's discussed with the same problem on an Evo.

This is only done with the pump apart and off the motor so that it can be washed clean to get the valve grinding compound out.

I once started my Shovel after it hadn't been run for a long time. I put a container under the breather hose. Everything was great until I shut the garage door on the oil filled pan. Some days.

Just remove check valve after draining the oil tank. If the seat looks good a slight tap with a aluminium or brass punch on a new 3/8 ball
And fit a new one. The spring must be the correct length I can't remember length. If seat is marked remove pump and lap as posted above. The oil tank sitting above the pump on on Evos back have gravity.

Well, I started it up and not a drop from the hose. I had a primary leak and I sealed that with case sealant and that is drip free as well. I was able to install a vent in the inner primary. Looking forward to riding it.

Yes good news indeed. And frankly, sounds very typical. Both my Evo and Shovelhead do the same thing if sat for a while, and then be fine for months. And both have brand new oil pumps. No rhyme or reason to it. The lesson (for me anyway) is fire the damn things up more often. LOL!
