This has happened to me three times and I think it might be the petcock. The bike will just quit like it ran out of gas, stop pull the choke out and it will start and be fine for hundreds of miles then do it again. Today my son was riding it and it quit and he pulled the choke out while he was still moving and it started up and ran fine. Could this be the culprit ? I think I just take the petcock apart and turn the spring around to disable the vacuum, but then what do I do with the vacuun line just cap it off ?  Also do I need to drain the tank or just turn the gas off ? I think the vent tube is fine. Its a 95 RK.
Thanks for the help ,

I believe that if you take the vacuum part of the petcock apart, gas will come out of the unit.  Quite frankly I can't stand those vac.petcocks.  I would strongly suggest that you go to an Indy shop and buy a straight gravity feed petcock.  They aren't all that expensive; yes, as they get older it may get harder to move the lever - but even the old Harley gravity feed unit was known to do that.  Many of those cases were people who never turned the valve off.  If you really wanna get pricey, Pingell is an excellent (long lasting) gravity unit.  When I drain a tank, I use a vide mouth funnel in a gas gan.  I unscrew the petcock and let it fall into the funnel, leaving the gas to flow into the can - drains pretty fast that way. Oh, yes if you did that, you would have to plug the vacuum line from the carb.  I have used a small sheet metal screw and some RTV in a pinch, but you can completely remove the tank and plug the line with a vacuum cap.

Turn the pet cock off,  loosen the nut holding the petcock to the tank just enough to turn the pet cock 180 degrees then tighten back up.  Next remove the screws holding the back of the vacuum thing to the petcock.  Reverse the spring and diagram.  Reassemble.  Loosen nut and turn petcock back to original position.

Next time you have the tank or carb off, remove the T vacuum line and run a vacuum line from the carb to the voes

if the the petcock is the problem, how would pulling out the choke
cause it to restart?it gets gas from the same petcock.pull the fuel
line off,put a small hose on the vac line & suck on it & see how good
the flow is.maybe your carb needs to be cleaned & the float adjusted.

My 98 FXDWG has done it to me twice in the past. Both times it was hot out (90 degrees) and I had started the bike without blipping the throttle. It seems the diaphram tends to stick closed in those conditions. I had just idled out of a driveway while waiting for my friends to get moving, and when I went to give it gas it just quit. Now when I start it I make sure to gun the motor slightly to pull enough vacuum to open the petcock up. I know I should replace it, but since I know what can happen, I'm just prepared.

Hey man...Let us know when you find what the problem is will ya. I had a fuel flow problem a while back too from the petcock but it turned out o be a problem of my causing when I had pulled the petcock off. I pulled it off cause I had heard something ratteling in around in my tank when I had my tank off ( another long story) so I pulled the petcock off and then dissasembled the petcock. When I put the petcock back together, I had put the black rubber flange back incorrectly (It goes only one way) and blocked off fuel flow to the carb while the petcock "ON" selecter lever was in the "ON" position. What a dumbass I was; took me a few days to figure out what I had done  :embarrassed:
