Used 'em on my '03 Wideglide without any troubles. Using them on my '07 Ultra without issue so far. The main reason I use them is for the nut on the end. It makes it easier to change the filter. I don't know if it's any better or worse than any other quality filter, but as long as you change oil regularly I don't think it much matters what you use. jmho

Google "K&N oil filter comparison"  You will find many comparisons for many different applications.  Kaws, Suzuki, Harley.....  K&N is always close to the top.

I've been using them for 10-15 K miles, just because I'm lazy and like the nut on the end.  I've been meaning to dissect one for inspection and add the picture to my oil filter pics catalog.  I bought from Jireh Cycles for $8.95, buy $100 and shippings free.  I bought 10 filters and some other junk I needed so I'm set for a while.  The  alleged parts guy at Auto Zone wanted $15 each.

K&N oil filters are all I use and recommend.............about the same price as the HD one, and much easier to use.

The thing I dislike about the K&N oil filters is the fact that they are made in Thailand.  I do know they are a good filter I just wont buy any when I can get a made in USA filter for the same money.

hrdtail78

Was told they were made at the same place that made the Mobil1 filters.

I just tried a new amsoil filter.Motor doesn't blow any oil into the air filter as it did with other filters.

You can buy the Hd black 5 micron oil filter for $8.95 from the stealer. The black filter is half the price of the chrome filter and is the same filter as the chrome filter with out the chrome. I got 2 black filters for the price of one chrome filter. Why buy the chrome filter you are just going to throw the old filter away.

I am with you on this one! I use the Black 5 micron HD filters. Where the filters are located, you don't even notice them.

That's a great point and stupid me for automatically just grabbing the chrome one.
Let's develop a reuseable chrome "slip cover" for the black filters for the chrome addicts and we'll all be happy.
Thanks for the wake up.

Because they’re pretty… Lol.

They have been out for a while now, some have fins for added cooling.
If it ain't broke... Fix it until it is.

Actually the chrome reflects heat back into the filter and increases the oil temps of the bike.

The black filters radiate heat into the air and will keep the oil cooler, I've tested this with my HD Digital
oil dipstick and found the black to run 4 degrees cooler....

The black filters are cooler? That is interesting, never thought about that. I had just bought a chrome filter, but after reading this thread, it'll be black from now on. Cheaper and cooler sounds good to me!

I also like the black filters. I use a K&N black with the nut. Cheaper than the chrome.

Another good option is the PurePower Lifetime oil filter (8110-BF)

I've been using one of these for the last four years with great success. They are 100% reusable. The outer fins help to cool the oil and the design increases oil flow (they claim about 20+ gpm).  Because the are reusable, you have to open them up to clean the inner stainless steal filter media. This only takes a few minutes, and I like to see what's been collected on the inside. It has inner magnets built in too... this helps collect metallic particles. Seems expensive at $200, but mine has already paid for itself. And no more worry about keeping filters on hand.
