just bought a Magellan Roadmate 2200T refurb on eBay for $79.00 with shipping (buy it now) and it came with a few optional extras. bought it from an electronics refurb dealer, 60 day warranty. it's waterproof, uses SD memory (solid state as mentioned in a post above). I think I'll be happy enough with it once I get it and use it. Cheap enough either way as it can't be bad, it will give me what I need. I live in NYC and ride very rural long distance all over the country. I bought it mostly to find gas and motels when I'm out in the boonies, I never believed you could get lost on a bike, every road leads SOMEWHERE! lol

Funny, I just bought one off Ebay an hour ago. Any idea what kind of mounts are available for these?

Rick, I haven't even looked at mounts yet. I'm a cheap bastard so i'm gonna wait until I get it and see what comes with it. It might include something that I can mount right on the inner fairing onone of my EG's or hopefully something I can adapt to the old ball head swivel mount I had for my camara so I can switch easily between all my bikes and my truck too. The refurb unit I bought said it comes with 2 mounts, suction cup, AC and cig plug adapters.

LOL!   Rick, I think  was going for the same Nav.   I was gonna Snipe but messed up on my timing.  I think I would have had you at $70.11.  If you were the person that won it, you got it at around $66??????

Amazon.com and probably others, has both the magellan and an aftermarket brand motorcycle handlebar mount for the Roadmate 2200T.  National Products also makes a RAM Mount for the 2200T which is one of the best but higher priced.   The cradle and automobile mounts are included in the box.

Thanks for the tips. I'll check them out.

For those thinking they dont want/need a GPS, its not all about bells and whistles.

I use mine mostly to show current speed, and distance travelled.  Its also nice to see the elevation I am at, since I ride the Rockies.  If I plug in a route to a major stop, it shows me how many miles til I get there.  Good to know to judge gas stops, since I dont plan them on my rides pretty much.

As for bluetooth and MP3 and all that, its a personal choice.  But, being able to search for  a gas station when you are below empty has helped me a few times as well.  But, on the bike I dont use it much for planning my destination....save that for the car.

Can you buy a marine unit and have it programmed to work as a land unit?

Reddog, no, the marine units will not accept land maps, and there are other issues too.

well I received the Magellan 2200T today that I bought off ebay. It's a nice enough unit for the price I paid. Now I have 2 questions about it.

1) why, no matter how I search, can't I find a single HD dealer? I went all the way to the point of being outside my local dealer (a mile from my job) when I left work and searched businesses and moto(rcycle) dealers "at current location" and it didn't find it. what is up with that????

2) anyone have the updated map available for it willing to give it to me? Magellan's website wants $79.99 and that's more then I paid for the whole unit! It looks like when buying it you can pay and download, if so, maybe one of my generous HTT bro's could email me the download? if they sent it on CD I'd happily arrange, through my UPS account, to have it picked up if someone would burn a copy?

Thanks!

Probably because many of the HD dealers have been forced to rebuild/relocate in recent years.  Any Magellan 2200T you buy new or refurbished will be several years old from date of manufacture.  I think one of the reasons Magellan quit offering the 2200T was because folks like us were buying them for motorcycles due to the fact they are waterproof, and they were missing out on the inflated price of a "genuine" motorcycle gps unit.  Even if you buy the updated maps for $79 you will still have a h*ll of a lot less invested in it than one of the other so called motorcycle specific gps units.  If mine quit tomorrow I would order another one.

DJ, that's funny.

My local dealer that I sat outside of trying to "find" just happens to be the oldest family owned HD dealer in the country. In business since 1905, started selling HD's in 1920 and has been in the exact same location since 1932. Frank Lombardi & Sons Harley Davidson, 440 Bay Street, Staten island, NY 10304
http://www.lombardi-hd.com/aboutus.asp

pretty odd that it doesn't show up. I tried Business & Shopping under POI, even entering street addresses of local HD dealers I know the addresses for. I cannot get a single dealer to show up. very, very odd.

I've never seen a Harley dealer listed as a business site. There is available a POI (point of interest) file that someone created which can be downloaded to Garmin units as a POI file but that's all I've ever seen.

Got a Garmin Conquest GPS coming in the mail.
Now what type of mount should I use?
The one that mounts to the fairing or the handle bar mount?
I thought I might start another thread, but figured there has been enough debate and good info passed here that jumping this thread ( so to speak ) was a better idea than a new whole topic that could be covered here.
Thanks All.

well I solved my problem. I found a site that exchanges POI files and has official ones from some business. actually 100's of specialized POI files in formats for all major brands of GPS. It's sorta like a limewire for POI files and all free!

Downloaded a POI file of 950+ HD dealers in the US (and parts of Canada, although I can't go back to Canada, but THAT's another story, LOL) and loaded it into my Magellan and I'm good to go now

btw Rob if you're taking a vote on it, I vote for Ram Mounts but it might be because I already had one I bought for my video camera a few years ago. it was easily adaptable to the GPS. I'm too cheap to by another one and they ARE very rugged and good quality.
Little Al

That is funny, little Al, but was just a guess on my part because I rarely use the POI search.  I live in the boondocks, but if I lived where you do I would definately learn to use it though!!

I just received a Ram mount for my Magellan. It seems like a sturdy mount, we'll find out for sure when I head to the mountains of NC at the end of the week. I mounted mine where the handle bar cover bolts to the nacelle on my FL.

The Zumo 550 was the first motorcycle specific Garmin unit, and sells for a bit more than the 660, and it's soon to be discontinued.

That's a shame.  I use the XM radio with my Zumo 550 and on long trips, it makes a difference.  The 660 does not have this feature.
