How does a person tell when it's time to replace the drive  pulley? What are the telltale signs of wear and when is it completely shot?
My 03 ultra has close to 80,000 and the chrome plating or whatever it is, has come off in some places. The bad thing is they're expensive and I've been out of work since last October.
Any used ones out there for sale?

i find them at swap meets for $10-15 all the time.
All in very good condition - almost new

I've been to swap meets before. NEVER saw a Very Good Almost New one for $10. or $15.
Next time you do buy me 4 or 5 of them.
Otherwise you didn't answer my question at all.

I hope this helps you. I wouldn't put a used one on, you already have a used one.

Eglide,
Here you go. Go to Ebay bike parts and plug in this number 110415536756. This guy is an excellant seller and you get your parts usually with in a couple of days of paying for them. I have done alot of biz with him and he is great to work with.
He also has another site Shovelheadkicker. I checked that one and he didn't have any pulleys on there today but check back often as he adds stuff daily. He also has drive pulleys as well in fact there is a chrome 1 1/2" one on there now. Not sure what tooth count it is but typically you want to change them both at the same time. If one is worn then they most likely both are.
Look at the pulley and see if it shows any wear to either side of the pulley. Raise the rear tire off the ground and rotate the wheel forwards and back and see how the belt travels on the pulleys. It should track true and straight. Also make sure the tension is correct and aligned properly. If you don't already have the alignment tool then in your Service Manual they give specific instructions as to how to make a tool out of a coat hanger or a piece of braizing rod, gas welding rod or any such similar rod such as that. I made mine from a good stiff coat hanger and it works just fine. You do need to watch for flexing of the tool as it can throw the adjustment out if you don't be careful when holding it in place. I used a white one and just mark it with a sharpie then wipe it with alcohol when I'm done so I will not be mistaken on the next bike. Good luck, Spidey.

I had to replace my rear wheel pulley on my 01 Heritage....chrome or hard coating was chipping off the teeth badly.  The transmission pulley was fine.  Must be luck of the draw.

I couldn't find a take-off (guys go to all chrome ones, etc) so I had to buy a new one.  Of course after I bought the new one at the dealer ($280 CDN) I was at a swap meet and saw two that were new take-offs (asking $40 each I think).  That's the way life goes.  If I want something it's either impossible to find or will cost a fortune; when I do find it and get it they're suddenly everywhere and almost for free......probably not just me......

I'll second what Spidey says about that seller. I've bought a buncha stuff from him, and all has been well.

No it's not just you. It's you and me!!!
Most of the time it's when I buy a used car or truck. I get the old "Why didn't you tell me you were looking for one" line of bs.
Oh well, misery loves company.  :pop:

I also have to agree with Supermax as a direct replacement. Phil has a pulley that weighs less than a small bird and will outlast the life of the bike. Great folks, he and his lovely bride. Don't know why I didn't think about the Supermax  pulleys. Good call. Spidey.
