I am the original poster on the link above and I just wanted to stop in and thank you guys for your support and to also post the website for the side cars so you can stay clear of this guy.

Here is a link to his website: http://www.universalsidecar.com/index.htm

Dabar, been following this thread over on the weldingweb site also.  (I signed up over there too, great site...)
I understand you are going to be meeting this joker face to face, that should be interesting.
Originally I thought that hack was built as a one off piece; I cant beleive that this guy is running a business, albeit unlicensed, producing these things.
I checked out his website....oh boy, thats some shop hes got there.
To the website itself, if I visit a site thats full of typos and misspellings, well, thats always been a red flag to me.
While its true thats not an indicator of somebodys talent, it tells me if they cant be bothered to put together a website properly for their business you have to wonder whats going on out in the shop.

I've owned three Harley-Davidson Sidecar rigs, including the present one on my 2004 Ultra, and I can't imagine riding on or in that rig. That's some of the worst welding that I've ever seen. It's pathetic. As a long-time Hobby welder, I try to do the best I can on every weld. Those are terrible.

If you've ever looked closely at the frame on a Harley-Davidson sidecar, you wll see the best tubing and the finest welding and fitting anywhere. Their quality of build is second to none. The folks at the sidecar plant in Tomahawk, Wisconsin put out a great product and are to be commended. I got mine new in the crate from them and I'm still impressed.

The stresses and strains on sidecars are quite high and demand only the best in manufacturing quality. Whoever did the welds on that frame, not to mention the alignment, needs some remedial training, fast!

For comparison, here's a link to a home-buit sidecar thread on the United Sidecar Association Website. It's been going on for months with dozens of photographs. The fellow doing it is a terrific fabricator and woodworker. He's building a sidecar that is safe as well as nice-looking.
