On the BDL 3" open belt drives for softails. It appears that the clutch hub has to be pulled off with a steering wheel type puller. - The problem I'm having, is finding a way to break the (I know its left hand threads) clutch nut loose. - I haven't found a way to lock the hub while attemtping to break the nut loose.  -  Whats the secret?

an air or elect. impact will work every time. just hold the hub with your hand and let r run till the nut comes loose.

I tried that with my air, and though I cant swear it has enough "arse" to break it loose, I'm relatively sure it would. - I didn't try it using heat on the nut though (in case they used a good amount of locktight)

I would think there is a better way though, because in order to be able to torque it back to the correct torque spec, you'd have to be able to hold and turn it.

You should be able to put the bike in high gear, and have a buddy hold the rear brake.   You can then use a breaker bar and socket to get it loose.

The BDL uses a plate that is removable just like stock.. I pull it then use an aluminum jam bar between the pulleys.. You will need a puller to remove the hub becasue it should be held on with Red LT.. Don't forget to LT the thing on assy...

Its the hub, that I can't figure out how to hold. I've used the jam bar for the motor nut, but when you take the clutch springs off, so that you have access to the clutch hub, there's no way to keep the hub from spinning. I'm sure if my impact had a lil more air and/or ass, it would spin it loose, but even then, I'd still have to have a way to hold/lock the hub down so that I could get the torque correct going back together. You could put the bike in gear, and try holding the brake on the rear tire as someone sugested, but the bike I'm pulling down has no working rear brake.

I'm headed out in a few to try and apply some heat to the nut area (not wanting to damage the seal inside that nut though) and see what happens then with my impact. - (still though, there has to be a way of holding that hub to torque it going back together)

You could get an extra steel and an extra fiber and weld together.

You could also take off trans top and shifter drum, then lock 2 gears accessed from top.

Yeah,
I forgot you BDL is internal.. The 3 inch external ones are different..

OK - I got it all off (lil heat and more air). Now, does anyone have any suggestions, on how to hold the hub, while I torque it when going back together?

Well, did you try as stated in post # 6?

Steel and fiber plate welded works great with a jam bar between sprockets, and taking trans top off and lock 2 gears works great too.

You need to figure out how to clamp the clutch plate. You could probably drill some holes in a bar and use the spring holding bolts to get some pressure..

There is a pic of what I did for and SE clutch..
