We've got a lot of great vinyl albums from the 60s and 70s.  These can be recorded on cassettes, but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about getting them to CDs.  We have a 200 disk changer but it doesn't record so I can't go direct to disk.  I have CD and DVD burners on the computer but no special audio card, just what came on the mother board.

Any ideas or am I stuck with cassettes?

Thanks for the quick replies, but I wasn't looking to actually spend money.  I was hoping one of the audiophiles would have a simple trick.

You can use the line out on your stereo to the line in on the computer sound card. If you still have the turntable. This is a total pain in the as* job to do. I have over 2000 lp's back from the old hippie days and I was going to try the same thing.
It is very time consuming. You have to record the whole lp in real time.It is saved as a wave file  about 400mb big + - some a side. Then you have to pick each song out of the big wave file. There is very good software that can you can use. It has the ability to sort these out but not always 100%.Probably not even 75%.I never had much luck using that feature.I would manually start and stop each recording. Then you have the turntable rumble ,pops and clicks from scratches on the lp to deal with. The software has features to help with this but the more it is turn up the less Fidelity you get. I washed each lp before I worked with it. Helped a lot with the scratching and rumble.I used warm water very mild soap and a shaving brush to do this. Make sure the water is not too warm or you will have a waving lp. You are looking at 3 or 4 hours time for each lp. And this is after you learn to do everything correctly. After all this is done you have to convert to mp3's. It won't take long at 800mb a lp to use up your hard drive unless you have a big one. If you have a few favorite lp's you want to convert ok , the whole lp collection  go by the cd's or down load them off the internet.I get a lot of stuff from Amazon. After about 10 or so lp's you will see what I mean.

I have a stand alone Sony CD burner in my stereo system that I burn all my 45's and LP's (1000's).

I called a nearby college and the guy was happy to do it since they have all the equipment.  He put 8mm filmstrips on DVDs; vinyl and cassette tapes on Cd's. There were over 70 of them and he worked on it all summer.  All he wanted for all that work was chocolate.

Unless you LIKE all of the pops and skipping and 100s of hours of work, I'd buy used discs to add to your vinyl collection. ;)

Vinyl is cool, and I wouldn't replace those platters for anything-just substitute them with current tech for mobile times. Don't yell at me, but (be careful) there's always Limewire... http://www.limewire.com/

You guys are great!  I'll check those websites, but it looks like the best advice is to buy the CDs.

On the one site i sent (http://www.polderbits.com/lp-to-cd.html) you have a 7 day trial ,software works 100%. Try it and see what you think. Most soundcard software has the ability to do this (soundblaster).I have done many lp to cd and I use a phono preamp from the turntable to the line in on my sound card. The preamp boosts the magnetic phono cartrage to line level . Works ok. You can also get a usb adapters for the turntable  or a usb turntable. Wal-Mart sells cd's over the internet, 88 cents a song or Amazon 99 cents a song.Or if you feel Adventists the Russans have several web sites that you can get music from. The compleat album or individual song. About $2.00 a album.  Be careful as I think even though you pay , it stills falls under the same thing as LimeWire or winMx . But these boys have a huge selection to chose from ,Just amazing.  Also  DO NOT use your own credit or bank card,  get one of the pay as you go cards and make sure it can be used overseas . Use a search to find the links for the sites. Also I use Virtual PC just in case any nasties come along. A lot of trouble unless you are going to get a bunch of CD's. Best bet, Wal-Mart, Amazon ,record stores ,second hand stores and flea markets .
