Back from Sturgis! 1 day/800 miles=tired.  Well I put a DTT/TC88 on to correct my kickback on hot starts which it did but ended up with decel popping which Wayne at Speeds Performance could not get out except to turn the AF adjustment to 4 1/2 turns out? I changed it to 3 1/2 for the ride home. I checked with the DTT rep at J&P and got a complete opposite DTT setting than when I had my bike dynoed at Speeds?(initial 7&advanced 3) This bike had no popping on decel going out so I'm home here hoping for some input on a cure from you guys with a DTT. 2003 FLHT w/95" Andrews 21,CV jetted w/46 & sporty needle,.030 HG, Rinehart 2-1,K&N filter. Pulled on dyno Max Power 79.38 & Max Torque 97.64 which I'm happy with for a baby cam build but this decel popping has to go! HELP!!!!!!!      Bandit

Are you missing or have a cracked  vacuum cap or something along that line that would cause an intake leak?
If they just messed with the dials and did not load a custom curve . You can put both dials at 5 and 5 this should be close to stk. If you dont have any missing caps or cracks in them I would try 5-5 and if the problem goes away its just gettin the curve rite. Maybe a little more advance . But if speed couldnt get it out somethings up. My guess is an intake leak someware.

7-3 has 41-43 degrees at the cruise range. That's plenty. 4 1/2 turns on the CV idle enrichment screw is excessive and indicates the need for a larger pilot.
You might try the 48 pilot. With the 7-3 dial setting on the DTT, when you role on the throttle in high gear from 55-60 MPH and it doesn't ping, that's very strange indeed. 7-3 is a nice looking curve with 32 degrees, all in, wide open throttle. This seams suitable for something like 9.8-10.2 to 1 compression ratio. I highly recommend buying the interface cable from DTT. Downloading the free software from DTT. Get both, the PC link and the data logger.

Once you have the cable and the software on your laptop come back on here and post your data info. 05FLHTC/Greg, maxheadflow/Bruce ,Mayor, Redpanhead, Axtell/Ron Dicky, John Sacks, UglyDougy and others including myself are probably the very best source of info you can find on improving performance on these machines.

With a carbed Harley tuning takes a while because you can't change the air fuel mixture with the punch of a button on a computer. Doing this while on the dyno is possable, but time is money on the dyno and very few modern tuners know carbs.

I think it's probably just a bit lean on the pilot, but we'll find out.

Do you have the USB cable to upload custom maps for your DTT? If so, I'll be glad to share a map with you that I used on a very similar build with very good results.

I don't think he has the cable yet Kleetus...

I've got a couple maps also for you Bandit...once ya get the cables, drop me a PM with your email & I'll send em out to ya.

Bandit like Rork suggested, drop the initial down to 5 and see if that cures your starting issue...if not try 4 etc...

For every number you drop the initial raise the slop by the same and ride it, once you get the hard starts satisfied with the initial setting leave it there and then raise the slope up till it pings, then back it off by 1 or 2 numbers.

After you get that done come back & let us know how the decel popping turned out...

I had a 95" 9.6:1 CR, CCP 183psi, Andrews 26G cams, CV carb with .046 slow & 190 main. Before I got the cable for a custom map I had to run a 3-4 to prevent pinging. That popping on deceleration could be a leaky exhaust clamp or a crack in the exhaust pipe. Ask me how I know.

After I check for any leaks exh & int I'm going to re jet to a 48 pilot because the 46 jet/4 1/2 turns out cleared up the decel popping I was having but I know turning out the AF screw that far is not right.  I have no pinging just decel popping. Will call Allen Alvarez at Daytona Twin Tec tomorrow and see about getting the interface cable and have him walk me threw the downloading if the 48 jet won't clear up the decel popping. Will post my updates with jetting because I need you guys for the knowledge I'm lacking at this time but I'm learning fast!       Thanks Bandit

Well shucks maybe I misread your post...sorry  :bf:

Shoot me a message, I'll be glad to help you out anyway I can :embarrassed:

Bandit, I had that exact build except Supertrapp 2.1 vs the rinehart and made the same numbers (04 flht with same jetting even).  Here is a $20 for your hot start kick back.  Call Amy at Bishops performance and put in some travel limiters.  My particular bike runs very well with the stock module.

BanditLoon2003

Jeffd, What would travel limiters have to do with decel popping? Before I put on the DTT the stock module ran good except for the hot start kickback which the DTT cured. I'm heading out to the garage now to start checking for leaks before rejetting and if she still pops on decel I'll rejet to 48 and then come back for more suggestions if she pops.  Thanks All   Bandit

Not Jeff but I believe he is referring to is lifter bleed down that the travel limiters may possibly cure potentially contributing to your hard starts & then maybe you would not have needed the DTT at all...

Must have set this with 1 rev or two with the interface.

Call speeds and find out if they loaded a custom curve. You will need the cable hook up if you plan on messing with the custom curve or seeing whats there now.
Wonce you have it ,05 can hook you up.
But if it was on a dyno at speeds I wonder why they could not solve this problem?

Yes, that is what I was referring too.

I'm back sorry had to go out of town for a couple of days.Step1: checked for intake leaks.  NONE! /  Step2: Replaced exhaust gaskets and still has the popping on decel so Step3; I jetted up to 48 pilot jet and it brought the popping down a little but it's still there so I called Brian at Valley Racing and I will be bringing the bike down to see him. will post the results. I'm sure it's something I'm missing or the DTT needs some fine tweeking. Bandit

I had a problem 2 years ago and resolved it 1 year ago. (self induced but did not realize at the time)

I had a back fire through the carb, added some choke and the problem seemed to go away, I adjusted the A/F to ~ 4 turns as you and it helped, Installed a 48 from a 46 as you are going to do.
Back fire went away but a hole lot of popping on decell!!

Thought it had to do with some chages I made, exhaust, fuel line/filter only.

Well I went to the next step the following year and pulled the carb, removed the bowl and checked the float hieght.

Well what had happened was when I was changing the fuel line/filter the carb had slid out of my hands, ~ 12 inches onto a wood floor, easily, not a clean drop!

My float had dropped way out of spec.  I readjusted it to spec and it was a different animal, no popping, no back fire, 46 pilot reinstalled and all is well.

So in summary if you have not done so allready check your float hight just to be sure. I may be causing you the same agrivation as I experienced.

Thanks Everyone!  Time for a confession on what I found. I checked everything and I mean everything even replaced the exhaust gaskets twice with no luck? I've been working on these things since I had my first panhead at age 16 a long time ago! Was sitting in the driveway after the jet change to 48 pilot and noticed the brass fitting on the manifold was missing the rubber cap I glued on when I installed the Pingle petcock? Ran all the way home from Sturgis like this??? must have come off after Speeds Dyno, I installed a new rubber cap w/RTV and rode 120 miles the next day No Popping but running rich. Am going to replace the 48 with a 46 and see if it is OK. I'm still going to call Brian at Valley Racing and set a date to get the DTT set exactly right with the carb AF. So some of us miss the easy stuff now and then! If anyone has a map they would be willing to share for a 2003 FLHT w/Andrews 21,Ness w/KN, Rinehart 2-1,95" build w/SE flat tops, and a DTT (tc88) I broke down and ordered the hookup from DTT to try my hand at this before I take it to Valley but definitely taking it to Brian if for anything the education from him.  Once again Thanks to all you people who make this site the best! Confession Done!  Mike :embarrassed:
