EFI stage 1 question

 A friend has an 883 Sporty, 2008. She added SE slip-ons when new but now wants some more power(but on a budget). I recommended a download and better flowing air filter. My question is, does she need a whole new system with a different backing plate such as the SE, or would putting a K&N filter in her existing air box be the same?

 just the k&n would help ,but she really needs to run a fuel commander of some sort..on my 07 1200 i used ness  stage 2 breather,and the ness big shot fuel tuner,with drag pipes the fuel tuner ran about 300$$ made a huge diff,and they are tunable to whatever changes she makes,just my 02$,it woked for me good luck
