How long should you wait between colors? Like a stripe or something. You know so the tape doesn't pull your base coat off. Thanks

I use Sikkens paint and with their basecoats its 30 min but I give it about 45 just to be safe

Oh, thanks. I was going to wait until tomorrow. Still am I guess, I already cleaned up. I didn't think that would be enough time thats good to know, Thanks

grump, I ALWAYS clearcoat between each color effect, it is cheap insurance against trouble with tape marks scratches etc!!

after applying the base, in the time it takes to clean the gun and mix a bit of clear, you can shoot a mid coat over the base safely...PPG paints are designed for "wet on wet" application.

masking, working on or tack ragging raw basecoat is asking for trouble...trust me on this one ;)

Sounds like a good idea, Thanks. I'll do that. Hey I was wondering looking at your pictures. How did you do that affect inside some of your stripes, is that shooting through a window screen?

Seattle is right, Trying to get tape goo off of base coat is very difficult without wrecking it. Many solvents will ruin the base coat. Yet cured clear will just laugh at lacquer thinner and not hurt it at all.

if you do smudge outside the lines on the midcoat clear, believe it or not acetone carefully used with a piece of gray scotchbrite is safer than laq thinner for removing minor defects, or just a bit of wet 800 paper does wonders as well.
wet sand your mid coat with 800 and shoot your next color effect or design panel, reclear  and repeat as necessary

grump, that effect is done by simply shooting thru a piece of tac rag stretched over the masked off stripe area...yea, I'll share a trick or two with my friends here

I admired that the first time I saw it. It looks like cloth. I had a cool idea to try and pull off for my own bike and had no idea how to get the correct affect. That would be pretty close. Thanks for the tips. I'll post a picture of this one when I'm done with it. Hopefully it will look pretty good.

While you didn't mention the product you are applying, PPG Deltron DBC requires 20-60 mins at 70degr between for tape time. In my case I needed to comply with completing all 3 colors in the required 24hr time before clearcoating. The pic shown is 3 base coats, prior to clear coat.

Do check your mgr's tech data sheet on your product.
