This will probley be opinion only but Im just wondering what the big differance between the twin cam and evo, Now before we get dumb I know 2 cams against 1 and in my exsperiance in auto twin cams cam on later ( higher revs) . ive owned only twin cam touring bikes and a 1980 sportser. I was realy wanting HP and Torq differances how easy was it to achieve higher numbers on evos draw backs of evos , was it easier t tune a evo, is a evo a fair power plant is it in ways better than a twin cam.

Thats it I like the twin cam but am looking at a chance to maybe step back in time and try something that sounds like a harley. I dont want a hot rod just a nice bike that will pull a trailer and maybe a wife... Na i want to have fun forget the wife.

That's cuz the cams were mounted above the head.. Fortuneably for us they aren't...  Max

Over on the EVO SECTION of HTT there is a TOPICAL INDEX relating to FXR's which is a model produced by HD during the evo production years, if you place your curser over the CLICK HERE below you will be directed to a particular INDEX and within the INDEX there are some topical discussions about the evo engine which might address some of your questions.  Might not hurt to take a "gander" and see if you reach some conclusions.  You might also benefit from reading about the FXR and the uniqueness of that particular HD as well:

I've both an Evo (97 Road King) and a TC (2006 Ultra).

The Road King is my daily rider, close to stock (mild cam only, at this point). The Ultra has been punched to 95 inches with flat top pistons, SE 204 cams, SE breather, and the S&S SPO mufflers.

They both sound like a Harley, the Ultra definitely runs better and stronger than the Road King. Of course, the Ultra has 30,000 miles, where the Road King is feeling a little of it's age with 80,000 miles.
Having said that, if you want more power, the TC motors are more robust. I would look for the kind of power you want for hauling a wife + trailer + whatever else, I would start with a Twin Cam.

With a stock Evo, you're getting around 50 hp and maybe 70 lbs of torque. You can change the cam, carburetor, heads, and go to high compression pistons and pick up some power. Anything past this, such as increasing displacement, you'll be splitting the crankcase open, machining for larger cylinders so you can get more cubes.

From the factory, a TC 88 or TC 96 doesn't have much more horsepower than an Evo, but they have more torque. Again, you can change exhaust, air cleaner, heads, and carburetor / EFI components to get more power. However, with the TC, it's easy to add cubic inches (just swap cylinders and pistons, no case machine work required). Also, there's a lot of performance stuff now out there for the TC bikes.

It's much cheaper to get 90 to 100 horsepower and 90 to 100 lbs of torque from a Twincam, either the 88 or the 96.

Personally, I chose a new TC over the Evo when it came time for a touring bike to slog around with. The RK is from my single days, and the Ultra happened after I got married. She's pretty small, but all the stuff she insists on carrying has made a big difference....
