Not trying to start a helmet debate, so keep it clean please.

Im using a KBC modular on my 07 RG and want to cut down on noise inside the helmet.  I dont want to keep buying helmets to find a good one that will reduce/eliminate the wind noise.

Anyone find one that does a good job of reducing the wind noise at highway speeds?  I wear earplugs, and am going to quieter pipes to cut the reverberation from the pipes, but want to also cut more wind noise.

Any suggestions on what you have tried?  And, I use  a short shield in summer, tall in winter, but still have a lot of noise from wind.

I have a Arai Signet and a Shoei R1000 and the Signet is a little quieter than the Shoei.  It is funny you would think that a full face would be quieter than a open face helmet but my shoe 3/4 is very quiet and I do have to wear eap plugs with the full faces.

I have a Harley modular which is made by AGV. It is much quieter than my 3/4 and half. I haven't had any other fullface/modular helmets but I can't imagine them being noiser than a 3/4. The AGV has some wind blockers on the bottom of the helmet to keep wind from coming in from the bottom.

I have had two full face helmets (both HJC) and both seem to funnel wind/motor noise up and into the helmet.  The quietest helmet I have ever found was a 3/4 HJC (CL5) open face with no visor.  I don't think it is possible to have a quiet full face from my experiences.  :crook:

In Europe now the list the protection value of helmets and the noise protection, best for noise is Schubert, who i think make the BMW helmets

I use a Schuberth Concept which is quiet in respect of wind noise however it seems to reverberate with muffler noise - I'm running SE2s.

I use SN36 earplugs with it so the overall experience is fairly peaceful and music and intercom is excellent using an Autocom system.

It's now superseded I think by the C2 which is ruinously expensive

So the answer is shuebert,,,$$$$$,,,even then it's not going to be realley quite......So my hearing after wear'n shoe's f/f all day(supertrap-2/1) 02fxd,w/sport shield & thats cut down....wind too loud,,,,Hell I got those form fit ear plugs with speakers in them...sh*t I can't hear them unless it's turned up enough to make me go deft after a few miles...

There's no sulution with the wolf=(wind)......who said they could get to hear a radio/talkie must have a huge shield....

I have a Schuberth C2. It was about $500 four years ago. As with most modulars, it is slightly noisier than a regular full-face. It's also a heavy helmet. I stopped wearing it because of the weight. I now wear an Icon Airframe full-face. It's lighter, better fitting, less costly and better ventilated than the Schuberth. The Schuberth was distributed for a while by a BMW dealer in Watsonville but their contract ended and I'm not sure who the US distributor is now.

I take it you don't like the KBC?  I had been looking at one of theirs recently.  I thought it was a good looking, well constructed helmet. But had no idea about the noise level.

I have an older H-D branded Shoei RJ-Air, 3/4 helmet. It does a great job of cutting out the wind noise, but amplifies the low frequency of the exhaust. Not pleasant. Sounds like riding along side some punk ass kid in a ricer car with the bass bumping wayyyyyy too loud. I run a V&H Propipe. My old Bell Shorty with Surefire earplugs seems to be a much better choice.

I have a Nolan N102. You can put it on your NOT quiet list  :emsad:

Blockhead80

I have a Nolan N100E modular, it's another one for the not quiet list.

I've tried a few FF helmets and they did cut down the wind noise. I have and HJC FF but I've never been happy either with the way it picks up the sound of the mufflers. I'd rather ride with a half helmet than put up with the re verb of a FF.  My open faced Super Seer does a better job all the way around. IMO Even that has a little Re verb in it though. I have tried foam ear plugs in it though and they work great. Never tried ear plugs in a FF though because I never have worn it for any length of time or that much. It mostly sits on the shelf collecting dust. It is only worn on short rides on very cold winter days. A FF helmet just seems to confining to me,and it just takes away the enjoyment of riding a Motorcycle. I have a few friends that I ride with from time to time that have switched over FF helmets and they have those custom made gel ear plugs. They seem to be the answer for those guys.

I have had several HJC FF helmets and they are not very quiet.
When I ride my Buells or HD's without a windhield I use my earplugs (Big Ears) and the FF helmet.
When I ride my 08EGC with 10" windshield I generally take the face shield off the helmet and don't use the earplugs so I can hear the music.

I have used Arai full face helmets for 20 years, and all have been "reasonably" quiet. Moreso than my 3/4 HJC AC-3, for example.
However, all my experience with full face helmets is from sportbike/motocross riding, with aftermarket exhausts... I like the Arai stuff, but it's a lot of money. My son says his new Shoei X-11 is fairly quiet as well.
The fit of the helmet also makes a difference with noise. A properly fitting full face helmet should be a bit snug (not tight!) and the cheekpads and forehead pad should be against your cheeks and forehead when you put it on. I see LOTS of guys wearing helmets that are at least one size too big, because they don't like the helmet to feel "snug". This improper fitment also reduces the helmets ability to protect you in an accident. All brands of helmets don't fit the same, some are for rounder heads, and some are for more oval shaped heads. Try a bunch of different helmets on before you decide. The differences can be dramatic, even with the same sizes.

A lot of the wind noise we experience in a FF helmet comes in from the chin area. If you want to experiment a bit, try wearing a bandanna or something that you can move up there and block the air... much quieter in my experience. Someone used to sell a stretchy "sock" thing that blocked this air, but I haven't seen one in a long time, and I disremember who made them. I had a friend who used to carry a silk scarf and jam it in the chin area of his Bell to keep things quiet.

A few years ago I bought something from, I believe, Competition Accessories. It was suppost to fit between the shell and the inner foam padding around the bottom of a full face helmet. It was to keep out the cold and I assumed noise. I could not fit it to MY helmet so I returned it. It might be something to look into....cheaper than buying a whole new helmet.

Some good points here, thanks guys.

I use a modular and may go with a normal full face.  My helmet also has some large pockets for the ears.  I might try installing some foam in those pockets for now.  I need to try on helmets and figure out what works, since each brand fits different, as Garry noted.

The quest continues....

I have an HJC SyMax II. It is NOT quiet and too heavy. I can live with the noise (ear plugs), but not the weight.

I went from the Schuberth C2 to the HJC Symax II in the hopes of finding a quieter and lighter modular. The Symax II was a little lighter but still heavier than I wanted. Finally went back to a full-face (Icon Airframe). It is lighter, fits better, has better ventilation, has more positions for the visor, is quieter, and was cheaper than the Symax II. I do have to take my glasses on and off when I use the full-face but that has become a small inconvenience when compared to the advantages.
