Dial Indicator

I have an opportunity to purchase one (used).  Looks in good shape and comes will all attachments(?).   The guy wants $60.00 for it.  Is this a good price?   Is there anything I should be aware of?

see what increments it measures in some are half a thou some are one thou etc .
Buy a good make like starrett or mititoyu a handy accessory is a magnetic base but if it doesnt come with one they are cheap to pick up

what brand?  if it is a top brand and not damaged it is probably worth it.  You can buy cheapo's new for $20

It all depends as mentioned. If it's in perfect condition, reads out to .0005, is made in US (or Japanese - Mitutoyo, for example) , even if it's older, it mght be worth it but that's really high. On the other hand, if it reads to .001, even if made in the U.S. it's not worth $60.

There are literally hundreds of them on eBay, some with .0005 readout for less than that. You can get the Harbor Freight models that read in .001 for $9.99 all the time and they are perefctly adequate for most things.

I went to eBay and typed in "Dial Indicator" and got 607 hits under manufacturing and metal working. The one shown in the link below is a .0005 Mitutoyo with free shipping and it's only up to $21+. There are many others on Buy it Now.

Also, there are dial indicators with a straight shaft with varying length of movement as well as Dial Test indicators that have a short, angular leg. They are quite handy in some applications. The link below is for a Dial Test Indicator. Either one will work for motorcycle work with a proper mount.
