Thats true Barry. I always back off the mag base before I smack the rotor.
It would screw up the indicator if you smack the rotor with the indicator tip against it.
I guess I should be more clear on a couple things.
I use bungie cords to hold the handlebars straight while its up on the Handy lift with the vice open. You can do this easy on a bike jack where the wheels are up off the ground too.
The bike is anchored down with straps and ratchets with the weight off the front end.
The magnetic base is down on the lift solid and the indicator tip is on the extream outside of the rotor so it wont fall into one of the rotor holes.
Rotate the tire slowly as not to move the front wheel side to side. Keep doing it over and over till your sure you have the high or low spot. If its high and the indicator is reading upwards, smack it from the side the indicator is located. If the indicator reading is low, run the dowel through the wheel and against the rotor from the inside to move it outward. Remember to back the indicator away from the rotor for the smack.
I say to smack it gently but gently can be a pretty good smack.
Try to make sure your going the right way with it as its easy to get turned around if your not used to using indicators and are not sure which side of 0 is + or -.
Again if you do smack it gently and are going the wrong way you can always smack it from the other direction and bring it back as long as you dont smack the crap out of it.
Spec is about .008 I believe so anything under that is ok. Guys who have worked with or have been machinests can get them real close and under .002 without much problem.
My bike used to make a racket all the time when using the front brakes. I found many people with lots of fixes for the noisy front brakes and did all the fixes I could find. Now that I true my rotors every winter and did a few other things that were recomended it always runs very quiet and all you hear is a slight whooosh sound.
Maybe next time I do the trueing of my front rotors I will take some pictures of the setup so when this question is asked I can just put up some pics.
Quick story, I was recently at a mini swap meet at a local Harley shop. The guy had a pair of rotors on the table for sale. I asked him what he wanted for them and he said $20. I just stood there for a minute and looked at them like I always do before I say anything and he said .... I should just give them to you. I said you mean for free? He said yes ... said they were warped and thats why he went to floating rotors. I said ok ... I will take them for sure if they are free. He said ok .... good luck with them. I stopped for a minute and said, I cant just take them without telling you that you could fix them. He asked me how and I told him. I said I would understand if he wanted to keep them now that he knows how to fix them. He said no .... you take them. Thanks for telling me how to fix them but I already have the floaters on my bike. He handed them to me and said you take them ... their yours. I have them on my work bench where I will put them on a wheel and true them.

Good Luck,
Sam
